Strange black sand in my medal`s depressions...

Hi,

looking at some of my campaign medals under magnification, I realised some sort of green paste OR very fine, glittering black sand in the depressions of the letters on the obverse and reverse - are these cast fakes with a rest of the casting mould sand on it ?

Jens,

It could be, or it could be dirt. Can you post a good scan of an example.

Hi Marc,

I used a microscope, so it will be impossible to make any photographs. I know this type of sand very well, because my grandfather was a moulder in a steel work and he used the same material to cast small and very detailed items.

This sand is glittering and black in colour like grinded hard coal.

Jens,

Then it seems that you know the answer to your own question...

:):):)

I just wanted to know, if anybody else has observed similar characteristics on one of his/ her medals.

I`m new in this forum, so I don`t know yet...

I wasn't sure where to move this thread, so it's here now.
