For serial number less than million, it is really good price. But here in Estonia war time star, number higher than million is possible to get 60 USD and even less, if You know, from where to buy. Less than million is already another story.

But one thing is for shore, they are not going cheaper. Common screwpost base red stars 100 000- 260 000( when they are in good condition ) went to amazing prize level. Russia is our neighbour and we feel that influence. Lot's of new collectors over there...and lot's of money also. Good things already went and are going back to russia.

and more stars, bought today. Price - 45USD.

1. MZPP Star, nr. 2172894. Attention to the mint mark!

"circle under base" screwpost base ORS...?

I just passed on an ORS s/n 221,xxx because I had doubts. It looked as if the screwpost base had fallen off because where it should have been it looked as if a circle had been fairly deeply etched or scribed around the screwpost, but this circle was in the actual reverse surface as opposed to the normal "raised" base I've seen in the past.

I came home and dug in the descriptions, seeing a note of something called a "circle under base" with two example side-by-side photos. What I saw looked just like the right-hand side photo: simply a circle and no raised "base".

I don't have photos of the ORS I saw - I wasn't in a situation where I could take decent photos. Did I end up missing something here? Were these screwpost bases actually flush with the reverse of the order instead of raised as I would have expected?

...Brian

Jeff,

The pics you show are of screwpost base ORS. You can find examples where the screwpost did not have a base and was soldered in the center of a circle inscribed on the back of the order. I remember a discussion a long time ago about this very topic, and it was concluded that at some point, the mint did produce a batch of ORS with a circle on the back to help in the centering of the screwpost.

Bryan,

They are less common orders, but you did not let the proverbial one out of the net IMHO ;)

I had one like that as well, Nr. 60929, where it appeared the post and base did not sit in "incused relief". I mentioned this to Alex, even sending him some high resolution scans of the reverse of this Order of the Red Star, and he swore he saw evidence of the incused relief I mentioned earlier. Alex stated, "This is T4-V5. There is a circle under base, actually it's very visible right at 6 o'clock." What do others think?

Here is another example where the incused relief is more readily apparent, Nr. 91677.
