I accidentally bumped on this militia badge on Ebay. I dug around the site more, and found several for sale with individual serial numbers (naturally). A pretty cool looking badge! There's a mint mark on the back too.

Do you guys have ideas about dating? Looks 80's to me. How about use? Traffic police?

Traffic police or equivalent. I think GAI represents State Automobile Inspectorate or something like that. Looks fairly recent (as in 80's).

Yes, it's the traffic police. They still fall under this name in many former republics.

It´s what is known as DPS in Russia nowadays?

When I as in Russia in 2005 it was called DPS (Dorozhno-Patrolnaya Sluzhba - road patrol service). But lately I have rean an artickle in which they still call it GAI (Gosudarstwiennaya Avtomobilnaya Inspektsiya). So maybe they have returned to the name.
