"Sükhbaatar" Order.

The Order of Sukhbaatar, highest award of the Mongolian People's Republic, has been manufactured in the Soviet Mint since the end of 1945. From 1945 to 1985, the Presidium of the State Small/Great Khural placed 6 orders with the Moscow Monetny Dvor. More information is available in my book "the Order and Medals of the Mongolian People's Republic 1924-1992".

In this tread I would like to post the scans of the Orders of Sukhbaatar that were produced as a result of each order placed with the mint and came to Mongolia in different batches. The order specimens posted here were all awarded at different periods to well known Mongolians and are all on display (or kept) at the Mongolian museums. Since the obverse is the same for all types, I will post just one scan.

There were at least two more batches in the 2000+ range. The lowest number I have seen in this range is 2009, and the highest - 2154.

An award that is for many (or used to be when they were available) the "gateway drug" for collecting Mongolian awards.

Before detailing the award, here's the prototype. Sharp eyes will detect a number of differences.

Type 1 -- screwback -- manufactured 1-200 in Jan 1946, 201-500 in 1956, and 501-800 in Feb 1964 -- observed serial number range Low = 2/
High = 800 -- Battushig A20a

The badge numbered “1” was awarded to Joseph Stalin of the Soviet Union (27 September 1945). Badge “2” went to Horloogiyn Choybalsan (Хорлоогийн Чойбалсан) on 28 January 1946 to accompany his hero star. He was also awarded #3 (same date) and, later, #5 (10 June 1946).

Type 2 -- pinback -- ordered 801-1400 in 1971, 1401-1700 in Apr 1981, and 1701-2000 in 1985-86 -- observed serial number range Low = 803/High = 2172 (was there a fourth batch?) -- Battushig A20b

Like the Order of Lenin, the Order of Sukhbaatar became somewhat "cheapened" by being awarded for long service.

Here's a nice recent addition to my collection: SB nr 37 (!)

Judging by named awards around that number, the recipient of this one was most likely also somebody with some interesting stories to tell... Keeping fingers crossed on potentially getting a name to put behind this SB. My guess, based on where I got it from, is that it was awarded to a Russian - but that's just a guess.

I, too, wish that progress had been made in consulting the rolls lying in the president's office. We were so close.

As you know, Urnukh lists #32 as a hero star award in 1949 and #84 in 1955, so you have an approximate bracket of time. So many Mongolian awards have been siphoned off to Russia in recent years, that just becauise you got it from Russia may or may not mean anything.
