Amazing -- this is probably a Navy female beret. One of the service dress uniforms for Navy women called for a beret of a similiar color.

Could be, but they are still making them in the Ukraine, and selling as KGB special units berets.

Maybe they didn't, I don't know, but doesn't a KGB Super Secret SPETSNAZ beret sound more expensive then just Navy :)

Yes the KGB did have berets. It is hard to tell exactly when each step of their history occurred but it is briefly this:

In late 1970s when Alpha group was set up it had the royal blue berets. Likewise, the originally tiny MVD Spetsnaz unit used the dark red beret.

By the late-1980s almost all MVD had the beret (black for OMON), the KGB boder guards had started using the beret and almost any uniformed KGB had the beret.

In beret-happy post-Soviet Russia everyone has berets. The FSB use the royal blue beret, BGs have green, MVD the red, MChS the bright orange. Also Ukranian and Belorussian units also have them.

Thus most are post-Soviet berets. Made to genuine military specs but of corse they make many extras to sell to tourists. Some, the cheapos with no lining or edging or label, are total tourist fakes.

It is possible in theory to find genuine Soviet era ones but they should have a lining, black fake-leather edging, a label with date, etc. Personally, I would not pay over $20 for even one of these unless it also had genuine signs of use and aging too.

What could you have got for that???? The mind boggles!
The green border guard beret would be worth about $25 at most...blue I am not so sure...
It is definatley not a female beret, they were a different shape altogether.
It will be a long time before it is worth that much!
