Newbie ? - Difference bet. Railroad Trans Grad & Eng. Inst. Grad badges

Hi! Total newbie here. I am just starting to collect these badges. I am trying to figure out the difference between the Railway Transportation Technical School graduate badge & the Engineering Institute graduate badge. I have one and would like to see if I can label it correctly. It seems that both are 3 pc. construction & both have Leningrad Monetnyi Dvor marked screw plate.

Also...for those of you in the know...is there any English translated book that tells about Russian badges and lists values?

The difference is in the shape. The engineer badge is diamond shaped and the railway is like yours. BTW your badge was also awarded to police and firefighters.

As for english books on badges, not that I know of. There are quite a few books out, but all in Russian.

Actually let me correct this and permit me to give you some info on badges. All good Soviet badges book are in Russian. If you want to start off with a book that lists badges with images (black and white) in english, then I might suggest Art of Russian Metal Miniature by L.L. Likhitskiy. Gives a listing of over 700 badges from 1917 to 1991 but no description.

For military badges, then there is Borisov's book Badges of the Soviet Armed Forces 1918-1991 in Russian.

I looked at both pictures of the badges but not side-by-side and my mind just couldn't register the difference in the shapes! I kept looking at the blue, white, gold crest, and the calipers & hammer and just couldn't see a difference so thanks for snapping me back to reality!!! :cool:

I am interested in the books and will start looking for them. Am I correct in thinking that Avers #5 might be more what I am looking for with a description and value?? I have a friend in Moscow & could perhaps scan in a badge description and get her to translate.

I forgot to sign my name so now I will introduce myself...my name is Barb and I have a 6 yr old Russian-adopted daughter. I bought 20 badges when I was in Russia in 1999 adopting her and just recently pulled them out for her to take to her Kindergarten class for a show & tell type presentation. I now use the guise that I am adding to that collection of badges for her to take to her class over the years and show them. Also for her to have one day and hopefully they will have appreciated and she can sell them if she chooses.

However, it's really that I have caught badge fever!!! I love them! :D I'm just not quite sure which direction to head off in. Right now I have about 150 of what I call "everyday badges" purchased off eBay. My friend in Moscow just wrote me today that she will help purchase badges for me but we have to work out the details, so hopefully, I am off and running! (She doesn't quite understand nor share my enthusiasm for them but is willing to help just the same. Now there's a good friend!) Well, enough about me and my fever to the whole world!

Welcome to the addiction :)

One word of caution--eBay is both a fun spot to browse and purchase stuff, and deals do present themselves. But, it is also the dumping ground for fakes of everything. If you get into buying stuff of any value, I'd buy from a reputable dealer, who you can meet thru this forum.

Avers 5 is good as a quick reference only. The pricing is out dated so don't rely on it too much.

Badges are excellent to collect. I started collecting them as well and am looking to expand my collection over the years. I have bought several books on badges and can always assist members in identifying badges of the Soviets.

I will echo the statement made by T. Nackowicz to be very careful on eBay. (Been burnt before myself). The cheaper badges can be had on the auction site, but if you want the more expensive ones, seek them out through a dealer to be sure. PM me if you need some links to dealers.

Here are my badges of this sort, all original I believe.

One diamond-shaped badge has a gold gerb, and the other has silver. I don't know why, but I've never investigated. The gold-gerbed one is heavy brass, and the silver is a cheap light alloy. I assume that the gold one is older. It also has a wierd screwplate.

Anyone have any comments re: my comments or the screwplate?

It's not gold but brass or some other metal.

Right. I meant gold-colored, not gold like as in the precious metal.
