Re: Ribbons, Ribbon Bars And Order Of Precedence.

For an original wartime production that is not correct but for a later production or replacement ribbon that is fine. I don't think the word "fake" can be used for ribbon. "Original" and "Replacement" works.

A fake Medal may come with non-glowing ribbon..... and vice-versa.

Cut links, soldered rings, and original suspensions?

Hello!

I'm sorry if this was buried in another thread, but I had a question about cut links, soldered rings, and original suspensions. Did all soldered and unsoldered rings have uncut, i.e. soldered/solid connecting links connecting them to the suspensions? Or did the more mass-produced, later versions, like the Victory Over Germany medal, have pressed-together links (not soldered)? I hope that question makes sense. I just see a lot of cut links on medals.

P.s. what does that mean for the originality of their suspensions?

Thank you!

Re: Cut links, soldered rings, and original suspensions?

Good question. Generally orders and medals had soldered rings. The mass produced jubilees sometimes have the pressed rings. That being said, sometimes the original owners would cut rings to transfer a decoration from a single suspension to a multiple suspension, for example. Cut links indicate that medals were "transplanted" at one time, including the potential to being returned to their "original" suspension. Often smugglers cut rings to enable more efficient portage or avoid detection.

Re: Suspensions, Ribbons, Ribbon Bars And Order Of Precedence.

Maybe someone can help me out here and give me a little more information on this ribbon bar. The ribbon bar is on a Soviet Lieutenant General of Aviation uniform that I recently purchased. The uniform (everyday service, late 1970's) is from a reliable source that bought it back in 1994 in Berlin from a Russian dealer. Anyway, I was wondering about the ribbons. Isn't the last ribbon on the third row for the Medal of Ushakov? And on the bottom row the second to last ribbon for the Order of Kutuzov? Isn't that unusual and aren't they out of order? I don't know if it means anything, but the ribbons are attached to long domed plastic strips covered by black clotch. The ribbon bar itself is on a piece of uniform colored fabric sewn to the uniform and is sewn under the jacket lining, not through it.
I'm no expert, but I think the uniform and ribbon bar is good. However, I would appreciate any thoughts and information concerning the ribbon bar. Thanks!
By the way, is it possible to identify the general based on the ribbons?

Re: Suspensions, Ribbons, Ribbon Bars And Order Of Precedence.

Ribbon hierarchy would indicate the last five ribbons, including the two you mention, are foreign decorations or Soviet badges. I recognize the last row's left-most as East Germany's Waffenbruedershaft medal. The ruby red ribbon may be the Soviet "Internationalist" medal while the bottom row's right-most ribbon is probably another foreign decoration or possibly the Soviet "Medal for Distinguished Service." This leaves your two which were either locally substituted by a creative ribbon mounter to reflect two other foreign decorations - or a faker's work. I agree that it appears legitimate and would opt for the explanation of a local substitute for scarcer, and probably unavailable samples of foreign decorations.

Ok, thanks. Bottom row on the right is the GDR Verdienstmedaille. So the one next to it could be the Order of Scharnhorst but using the Kutuzov ribbon. I still wonder about the Ushakov ribbon though.

I thought the Verdiesnstmedaille ribbon looked really familiar.

Hollywood strikes again.

A prop from the Netflix series "Altered Carbon" Episode 9.

He's supposed to be a Marine Corps General in 2384.

Come on props department!
