Medals "For Distinction In Military Service".

As the reward TO THE USSR, medal existed to the moment/torque of decomposing/decaying the Soviet Union in 1991.However, after the output/yield of the edict of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of Russian federation of 2 March, 1992.2424-1 O THE STATE REWARDS TO RUSSIAN FEDERATION, medal was revived as the reward TO THE RSFSR.

This comes from soviet mint
There seems to be no diffrence in medal except possibly that it was fastened by a neadle instead of a screw.

How rare is pinback variation of For Distinguished Military Service Medal?

I saw both 1st and 2nd class offered for $350 as seller claims these variations are very rare.

My opinion is it's way too overpriced.

What do you think?

I agree on the "overpriced" comment!

My buddy was able to purchase an excellent 2nd class at a local show for $10 - $15. We did have to double-team the seller at bargaining the price down though. It was a screwback.

I see some 1st classes being picked up on E! at like $70 US a piece... That is crazy!!! But $350 is a bit "high".

This one looks like the "modification" may have been applied post factum. the pins look like the common pins from 100 yrs Lenin medal.

I have a couple of awards like that, one in particular is an Order of Red Star that was converted from a screwback to a pinback.

Note the heat marks around the attachment area.

I have a hard time telling if they are genuine, but if they are they are quite rare. It´s not totally wrong with pinback medal of... This medal was awarded after the breakdown of the USSR as an transitional medal before new russia applied their new medals so this is a continuation piece from the middle time. I have no idea how many that was produced but I doubt it was awarded for a longer time than five years. It would be an easy medal to fake since the pinback is the only differnce from the soviet type. This is a Buyer, Beware!! piece

Actually there are two differences:

1. Obviously the pin/screw back.
2. This type has clear enamel covering full obverse vs. just the center part of the medal...

I don't think it's worth the asking price but these days you never know!

BTW, I wouldn't by surprised, if veterand convereted their medals to pinback themselves. After all, it's making holes in one's OWN suit is not the same as making hole in his uniform!

It's not converted.

The hole for the post and the star is centered on the suspension.

If you look closer at the picture you will notice that beside the shadow you can see solder...

To answer your wo questions in the order you gave them, it is not a very common medal (about 120,000 were issued), and yes, it appears to be real from what I can see.
