Paul's serial tables meet research!
Hi guys,
Paul (desantnik) kindly volunteered results for a group of medals/orders I was about to pull up archival research on. Over the years, Paul has accumulated pretty extensive serial number tables. Paul's insights were really accurate with only one miss (red)! Here's the comparison of results Paul volunteered based on number vs actual results from TSAMO. Cool stuff! George Glory-3 146,416 PSJ says: 1 Baltic Front; Research says: 324 rifle regiment, 77 rifle division, 1 Baltic Front Glory-3 224,255 PSJ says: 2 Belorussian Front; Research says: 254 rifle regiment, 194 rifle division, 48 army, 1-2 Baltic Front Bravery 93,387 PSJ says: inconclusive data; Research says: Combat Medic 1st Class, 1 Shock Army, North-Western Front Bravery 362,870 PSJ says: Steppe Front; Research says: 233 guards rifle regiment, 81 guards rifle division, Steppe Front CSM 85,904 PSJ says: Bryansk Front; Research says: administrative head of military hospital, Leningrad Anti-Aircraft Army, Leningrad Front CSM 117,260 PSJ says: Western Front; Research says: 31 Separate Sapper Brigade, Western Front CSM 210,651 PSJ says: inconclusive data; Research says: 88 Artillery Regiment, 80 Rifle Division, Volkhovsky Front CSM 241,350 PSJ says: on seam of NW and Kalinin Fronts; Research says: 257 Rifle Regument, 185 Rifle Division, Kalinin Front CSM 253,777 PSJ says: SW Front; Research says: 846 Rifle Regiment, 367 Rifle Division, South-Western Front |

Good stuff!
Its really impressive to not just be able to map out blocks that were long service, but to be able to give a rough estimate as to the region the deed took place just by serial number. Super kind of him to let us share his knowledge and hard work, commendable indeed! :) |

Re: Paul's serial tables meet research!
It is always nice to have these range guesses, but there is no substitute for research. Even within the much-maligned "long service" blocks (and, of course, folks with long service didn't ever have interesting records?), there are odd awards for small postwar conflicts, awards to foreign allies, awards to POWs and WIAs, etc.

Re: Paul's serial tables meet research!
It's nice when you can get a quick idea of what the results of research probably will be - you can avoid or obtain along those helpful guidelines. I know that Paul has indeed put in a vast amount of unceasing work into this hobby (or lifestyle) and I'm sure he takes heed of every item offered by us to the researched items sections. There is no substitute for research but to be able to have the gist before you set off is always handy.
As for researching long service awards, I have a Red Banner that is almost certainly for service that I will research one day. No doubt to an officer who saw the GPW through. The problem is though that the research will most likely open up a can of worms when it comes back with a record card as long as my arm of items I will never have. Sorrow and joy at the very same time. Then again I could be surprised. As is the nature of what we do here. Now I'm going to indulge in one of my hobbies; Thanking Paul. We all have a lot to be thankful of and I know I have to be especially thankful. Ura! Ura! Ura!

Thanks gents..(and kudos to Paul!) what I'd really like are serial tables like these. First numeric column is medal number. I have a few sheets like it, can you imagine how great an entire volume would be.. :)

815470 was for 1367 Regiment 414 Division for actions 3rd October 1943 (Before they got the title "Sevastopol") - you'll be hearing more about that one soon. Part of a researched group with some additional stories. A Paul purchase too!

Re: Paul's serial tables meet research!
Excellent!
I do think the Serial number tables would be a big help if say you had 10 Pieces you were thinking about researching but only had the money to get 1 record card. Of course long service awards could always belong to someone with a brilliant story and hell they may not even be long service, but a possible heads up is always nice :-) I have an idea for a website that i think would be brilliant and this sort of info would be invaluable. I just need someone who can design and build websites now! Tom |

Re: Serial Number Years
Now I've been thinking about serial numbered and unserial numbered Medals today. There was obviously a transitional period when both will have been current due to logistics.
Does anyone know of examples of awards that if unnumbered were awarded before a numbered Medal or the other way round? If you do can you post it in related threads. http://soviet-awards.com/forum/sovie...stinction.html http://soviet-awards.com/forum/sovie...at-merits.html http://soviet-awards.com/forum/sovie...l-bravery.html http://soviet-awards.com/forum/sovie...ur-valour.html It may give clues as to where the first stocks of unnumbered awards went and where the last stocks of numbered awards were. I'd think the last numbered ones would have come from somewhere remote and the first unnumbered ones in somewhere close to the mint.
