I notice that Igor Smirnoff, the President of the Republic, has signed (stamped/printed) this document. Are the other documents you have or have seen also signed by him? I ask this due to the small population of the country (appx. 555,000) and his apparent (according to Olviya Press) omnipresence in most areas of the country's life. Greg

All "state"-level awards I remember have been signed (or as this a facsimile signature) by Smirnov. I'll keep a look out for subordinate ministerial-level awards.

The normal issue for this Medal (and the very similar Moldovan equivalent) is brass/gold coloured. This "silver" and very crudely made example is one of only three prototypes created.

Not the first medal inspired by the famous photo of Junior Political Officer Aleksej Eryomenko. Taken in Eastern Ukraine on 12th July 1942, the photo shows Eryomenko leading his men in an attack. He died seconds later.
