Hello everyone, I pick a Soviet Dress Paratrooper tunic today but I found something troubling with it. I noticed that the right sleeve of the tunic had a Russian Federation Armed Forces Patch on it as the left had a Soviet VDV patch on it. Please forgive my ignorance but would anyone know why there is a Russian Federation Armed Forces Patch on the left sleeve of a Soviet tunic?
I am thankfull for any help that I can get. Here are the photos. I notice that it also missing four badges on the left hand side. Which adds another question to the list would they be soviet or federation badges? Last edited by CtahhR; 06-27-2012 at 05:36 PM. |

Re: Soviet Uniforms and Russian Federation Armed Patches
Thanks for the photos. This is what I expected. In the 1990s existing Soviet military basically were given these new sleeve patches to wear on their parade uniforms (and often swervice uniforms, too), just as they simply attached the new eagle symbol onto the crown of the caps.
This was just a "patch" (excuse the pun) until the new uniforms became the norm as the men and women in the Soviet military transitioned into the new RF military. Phillip

Re: Soviet Uniforms and Russian Federation Armed Patches
I don´t know. Officers aren´t supposed to wear the branch patch, right?
That Soviet/RF armed forces patch combo plus the shirt shoulderboards smells like kosher to me, bubbe.

Re: Soviet Uniforms and Russian Federation Armed Patches
Are the shoulder boards white with a blue stripe? If so, I doubt this uniform is legit at all, but rather a put-together from the wrong parts. This uniform should have golden shoulder boards, or in rare cases, silver (for administrative). I don't personally like the combo of the two patches, especially as officers generally did not wear the branch patch.
As for the missing badges, it could be a Parachutist badge for XXX jumps, a graduation badge, red guards and some screwback order. |

Well, they are sliver with blue but shoulder boards are missing buttons and the jumper insignia.

Re: Soviet Uniforms and Russian Federation Armed Patches
Although variations in the early to mid-90's occurred, I too think this is an assembled uniform.

Looks pretty much that you got an assembled set with the wrong parts as Tretov said.:thumbsdown

Re: Soviet Uniforms and Russian Federation Armed Patches
Thank you all for your help. I took a look at the threating inside of the uniform. The patches had the same one and were done in the same style as the tunic but shoulderboards were not. So I think the patches are orginal to the tunic but the shoulderboards are not, just as you guys said. Now does anyone know what the shoulderboards are? Airforce? Army? and does anyone know the date? I am guessing between the 1960s and 1970s.

Re: Soviet Uniforms and Russian Federation Armed Patches
The pictures aren´t clear enough, so a better pic of the shoulderboards will help.

Re: Soviet Uniforms and Russian Federation Armed Patches
Silver field officers' shoulderboards, unless I am mistaken, were abolished in either 1969 or in 1974. Anyway, altough that mix of patches is something that could have happened (If You look up S. Zaloga's book on soviet Airborne forces, there are pictures of paratroopers wearing similar mix), the fact that the boards are silver to me indicates clearly that this uniform is put-togeather.
