What is the difference in the color. I have two four sided ones that feel like they are made of aluminum. One has the State seal and bundle of wheat in gold, the other in silver. What does this signify? The backs have a sort of crosshatch pattern.

These differences in colours are due to changing production techniques. They got (physically) lighter as time went on and the enamels had slight variations in shade with each batch.

Different photographing/scanning techniques also can give a less than true representation of the colouring.

I see. Does this mean they are 1980's production, just before the six sided ones? What year did these (overall) start being issued?

Graduation Badges were reintroduced in September (I think) 1946. The 4 sided ones are for higher level educational establishments than the 5 sided - they are from parallel time periods.

The lighter examples come from later but pinpointing an exact date is open to speculation. The aluminium ones were rather common in the 1970's and 1980's.
There are hundreds of examples of various graduation Badges (Civilian and Military) to look through in these Badges sections. Most of these standardised "specialist" Graduation Badges can be picked up extremely easily and often for a little as a dollar or under $5 with matching document. Although the oldest examples or more peculiar ones do bring a premium.
