Fake KGB Badge

This badge was part of a very large and well established state-security collection that was recently sold off...this was the only badge that was not easy to ID (if its ok).

Thoughts?

Everything about it looks crapola - irregular white enamel, "neon" colors, too darkened bronze colors, etc.

White enamel...

The white enamel doesn't look much worse than what I've seen on some early guard badges, some of the paramilitary badges, and labor badges from the 40's and earlier. In short, it generally doesn't look that bad to me.

I think better lighting and macro on the photos might tell a bit more. Beyond that, I don't know my chekist badges, so I'm starting from a delightful point of ignorance.

Similar one in Goodman's book...

On page 81 of Martin Goodman's "Lenin's Legacy", you'll find an 80's era "Honored Member of the KBG" badge that has the same layout, colors, and wording minus the white enamel, but the Goodman photo looks like an aluminum badge and has a goldish finish to the "bare" metal parts. Other than that, they are the same badge. The one in the photo in the posting above just looks a lot older and with white enamel.

Doug,

How about showing us 'the dark side of the moon'.

rear

Here is the back of the badge; seems very dark, was tough to get much detail.

Doug,

The back confirms what we thought: fake patina, not of MD manufacture...

I am not good on these, and all info from here is hearsay, but a "friend" once told me, "green backround is border guard," for what its worth. They were a part of the organs and there is a Russia web site with a green background "egg."
