Who made the first PRC medals?

The design is almost exactly soviet and the quality is superb. Was it MMD? After these medals, the quality deteriorated dramatically. Are there Chinese awards collectors on this forum who could shed lite on this subject?

Re: Who made the first PRC medals?

This is just a guess, but perhaps, like north korean awards, chinese ones were made at USSR and/or Czechoslovakia.

Tal, even in the first years of the PRC, chinese medals quality did vary a lot. Some hypothesis? There was several mints (regional mints, because tehere were regionnaly awarded medals). About the soviet-like design , think about some bulgarian medals which copied the Soviet ones and yet minted in Sofia... I'l not aware about Monetnii Dvor minted chinese medals. But I do know State orders (which prevail above regional orders and medals I stated precedently) were minted with the most absolute quality : the order of Liberation for example... (the one on this picture is maybe a pin-back copy; I personnaly saw a screwback one with better silver quality metal...)

Re: Who made the first PRC medals?

I guess it is a bit difficult for Mr. tang to use English to explain complicated things. I will try. the orders and medals we are discussing are called 55 series due to being issued since 1955. The order of the first of August, The order of independence and freedom and the order of Liberation. Each order has three classes. also there are three counterpart medals with just one class. the orders are issued to middle to high ranking officers. the medals are awarded to low ranking officers and soldiers.

The question like who made the first chinese orders and medals have been discussed among chinese colloctors for a long long time. there is still no agreed answer to such questions. Some said these orders and medals shall be made by one of the Soviet bloc countries. It could be the former Sovirt Union. Because the nobody can explain the quality deteriorated dramatically for later issued medals. Some believe that these orders and medals are made by China. It is just a guess. So far no evidences have been found.

the order posted by Sebastien is the third class Order of Liberation. there is one thing for sure,55 series orders are only pin-back type and made of silver and gold plated.

Re: 1955 medal of china

The two others are fairly common. Less so with matching numbred package, far less common in group with document.

The first one is quite rare = holy grail.

And, then, add the orders linked to each, each in three classes. Yes . . . .
