I'm reading "Blood on the Shores" at the momnet which is about a Soviet Naval infantryman during WWII and he started life as a Submarine engine room mechanic...not a bad book if you can get hold of it...

Soviet Subs
Hi Doug, I haven´t wisited the Leningrad museum but it sounds like a future "must see place"
I have been inside a couple of old Swedish submarines and also inside US sub USS Pampanito in San Francisco. I think a Submarine would be the last place I would like to be in if there would be a war ! And about your question William about the red stars, I too have been wondering about this , in photos from early war they often wears Red stars and OPWs on the "wrong side" maybe it was regulated later in war ? Have a nice weekend !:) Christer |

Yes, they were. Some of the other folks might be able to give you more specifics, but I'm fairly certain that the switch from the left to the right breast occured during the whole early-43 overhaul of Soviet uniforms, awards, etc. --Dave |

The submarine LEMBIT is also an ex-soviet used sub. Originally the Estonian got it and used it during the 30-ties. Later "liberated" by the Red army and used by the Red navy. It scored a hit on a merchant ship (don't remember if it sank another), later used as a training sub in the Baltic sea. Why I'm writing this? Well, it is now on display in Tallinn. No place to visit if you are claustrophobic...;) Inside it has a small exhibit. There you can find a "podvodnik" cap tally, very rare thing to find if you collect uniform parts.

If you visit
in Helsinki, Finland, go to Suomenlinna fortress (an island just out of the city). There you can see the very only submarine that is left Finland´s WW II submarines.
That is the boat which have been in real action against the Soviet ones (maybe even against LEMBIT ?). Jussi-Pekka |

A question pertaining to the photo of Belyayev and Leonov: I noticed that they are both wearing service caps decorated with embroidered, gold-wire cockades (the wreath around the cockade, specifically) and airforce wing insignia. I was under the impression that such embroidered cap devices were for wear by generals only. Does anyone have any thoughts about this??

interesting....
observation; yes, generals service caps had the embroidered wreath and officers had metal, attached to the cap badge.
1. maybe they got higher quality uniforms; its possible 2. the photo looks older, 1960 or so, perhaps they were still using embroidery at times ( they did in WWII for officers). dd |

The picture is - at least - from 1 9 6 5, after the flight of Voskhod 2. Maybe it is similar case like the white uniforms - non regulation.

The woven cockade was certainly used on avaiation caps during the 1960-1980s period but I have only seen it being worn by cosmonauts. True, the M1949 air force cap for officers has woven embroidery cockade and the miliatary regulations state that both woven and metal cockades were worn by officers in 1958. However, I have a photo of Viktor Gorbatko wearing a M1969 parade cap with woven embrodered cockade which is unusual as they were officially made from aluminium by this time (as were the aviation wings).
Whether this was a private purchase cap or whether it was permited for Cosmonauts only to wear this type of embrodered cockade remains a mystery at the moment. I will try to find out more.

Why did he get a medal for sinking a swedish ship?
We weren't at war with the USSR (and haven't been at any war since 1809). |
