stripes etc.
As far as i can tell one stripe was for jr offiers, two for senior officers.
Also, remember that anchors were only used for line officers; naval infantry or navalaviation (etc.) would have had the mtallic or embroidered bars on the cuffs. DD ps-Order of Lenin was not given after the first HSU; not sure why. |

Didn't Leonov serve at some point on a cutter, or as captain of a cutter unit in addition to his naval infantry role?? Maybe that is why he has the anchors.

He was actually an engine room mechanic on a Soviet submarine.

anchors
The anchors would always be on the collar; only replaced on the cuffs for non-line.

And again:o , those guys in the black and white pic up there, using ribbon bars mixed with the G. Dimitrov order and the parade visor cap?...They were very rebel kids, non respecting the regulations...They did what they wanted!

Kabanchik, I think the m58 parade uniform is nearly identical to service one, same olive-green cloth, but shoulderboards are goldenned and collar patches (?) have metallic golden frame instead of cloth alone...(regulation book military ed , moscow 1959, pp84-85-86, and "voenana odejda VS CCCP i Rossii, Redkaia Kniga 1999 p202). Correct me if wrong.
Esteban, they do follow the rules, excepting few details...embrodied visor cap cockade instead of metallic one (but as DougD said, maybe a privilege for "Pilot-cosmonauts of the USSR" and heros of SU...One of them is fiercely posing with his visor cap a little bent down, not very regular, but a little sign of distinction accepted between much aviators of the wolrd (in France too). The Dimitrov is certainly shown by courtesy for the counrty hosting them, who has decrened it to them during a diplomatic/propaganda trip... This is why Gagarin, Tereshkova gathered most prestigious and symbolic awards of brother countries they visited...yes, the attribution was a bit "automatic"...but that's a symbol.

Aw yes, that should explain. I said what I said not so much for the order, it was more for using ribbon bars with the golden cap chinstrap used for parade, but if they were at Bulgaria at that moment showing courtesy...Then is right.:p

Gentlemen,
I've got this photo from a person in Bulgaria for just $4. You are 100% right on the fact that the photo was taken in Bulgaria just after the cosmonauts were awarded the highest Bulgarian awards. That awarding took place shortly after their flight on their tour through various countries, sometime in 1965. Just remember - Leonov then was the FIRST man ever to go to the open space - can you imagine what kind of celebrity status he had at the time the photo was taken? I bet you he could've get away with some irregularities in the uniforms!!! In addition - they were in another country - how many people there actually knew or cared about them wearing not exactly regulated outfits? William |

I confirm obsreving the B&W photo they're wearing the full set of hero of Narodni Republici Bulgaria, a gold xtar extremly close to the soviet one and an order of georgi dimitrov.
For another exeample of friendship among peoples with two cosmonauts, the joint DDR-USSR soyouz 31 with V.Bykowski and S.Jahn au 26 aug 1978: both have respective highest awards of their country: both do exceptions with standart uniforms rules (Bykowski wears his blue M69 parade uniform, Jahn does too). Here they're visiting a work brigade of machine -tools in Karl-Marx Stadt (now Chemnitz). Sorry the pic is awfull…Jahn on his right breast wear the DDR pilot wings, soviet academy badge and with rectangular ribbon the DDR medal cosmonaut (extremly scarce, 1500 euros mini), both heros stars of DDR and USSR and ribbons. Bykowski wears on his right the classic pilot wings, academy badge and the soviet cosmonaut medal. On his left breast the 2 HSU stars and the DDR hero star, and on the collar the Karl-Marx Order.
