Hello All,
I recently purchased a large group of USSR archive ID photos. This officer appears to be a high rank. The sholder boards can't quite be mader out. There are two "lumps" one above the other. Marshal's star and USSR emblem; or marshal's star and brach of service emblem? Can't tell. The lapel insignia is a 5 pointed star surrounder by 2 oak leaf braches. That would be motorized rifles if gold colored and administrative if silver colored. My USSR uniform book is dated 1961 and shows different gold lapel trim for marshals and generals. The photo is dated 1957. His medals are 2 Red Stars, OPW, Victory medal, Order of Lenin and a few unidentifiable. If he was a marshal or general you would think he would have more higer awards then just the Order of Lenin. Hopefull someone can give me his name and rank from the back. Thanks for you help. Can anyone give me a name and rank? Thanks, Tom Last edited by CtahhR; 04-15-2014 at 12:46 PM. |

He is a Colonel of Rifles, and his name is: Zudarenko, Zakhari Grigorievich. He's wearing the Lenin, two Red Banners, Victory Over Germany, 30 years of the Soviet Armed Forces, two Patriotic Wars and two Red Stars. The pic was taken on 2 August 1957.
Nice pic. :) --Dave |

He is also from the Odessa Military district.
He is wearing an M1955 officer parade uniform. This style of uniform was fairly unique for officers in USSR history - double breasted, with metal leaves on collar and cuffs. You are not the first to confuse it with a general or marshal uniform but it was officer only. Shawn |

Yup, as usual Olitchnik is right. The M1955 parade uniform was in use for only three years and was steel grey in colour. The tunic for armoured units had a black velvet collar.
These uniforms are reasonably common and appear at fairs etc from time to time. I posted one up a while ago complete with cap, so if you do a search on M1955 parade uniform you will find it. If you have any more photos you need id'ing please post them up.

It's possible to get his citation for his Order of Lenin, but it's going to run you at least $60... The question is, is it worth it for the price you paid for the photo? --Dave P.S. Want more? |

Hello Dave,
Thanks for the info. You ask "what more?' more what? I'll pass for now about paying for a records search. I was hoping there was a book that listed Order of Lenin winners. Tom |

Unfortunately, there isn't a book on Lenin recipients. I've always thought it would be handy to have a book that would cover the military serial numbers and recipients up through, say, serial number 20 or 30,000, but at the moment there's no way to do that that I'm aware of. --Dave |

Hello All,
Here's something a little different. A photo from the archives of a naval officer. It is dated 1954. Tom Last edited by CtahhR; 09-17-2013 at 08:01 AM. |
