Voenkomat Medal Ring Variations.

Hey Marc, could you enlighten us how to determine approximate production year of a voenkomat medal based on its ring? I know you have good info :) I like to compare voenkomat medals to jubilee medals in order to guess approximate production year, but I don't know how reliable that is.

Re: How to know voenkomat medal production year

You've got the right idea, unless one could have access to the Mint archives :(

There is a clear evolution of the shape of the ring:
. flat with a funnel-like opening on both sides (this is the way it was struck, it is not a flat tab that was then pierced)
.. hard-angled internal hole
.. soft funnel-like hole
. rounded (two varieties):
.. thin ring
.. thick ring (several sub-varieties)
... regular circle, fully circular hole
... regular circle, noose-shaped hole
... indented circle at the base, circular hole
... indented circle at the base, ovoid hole

Marc

Second type: Convex ring

There are two different varieties in term of thickness of the ring:
. Thin ring (sorry, no picture available at this time, but commonly seen on Long Service and Virgin Lands) [I'll post a picture as soon as I have a suitable one]
. Thick ring (right)

Awesome. Great start.

Just for more clarity, could you classify the rings in my pic?

1 ---> T1 V2
2 ---> T2 V2a
3 ---> T2 V1 (not a full noose, but not a full ring)
4 ---> T2 V1a
5 ---> T2 V2b

Re: How to know voenkomat medal production year

Is it due to this variation in rings that help create so many variations of Medals such as Victory Over Germany which have previously been overlooked by many?
