In combat he showed himself a brave, excellent ground assault pilot. He was engaged in particularly fierce fighting during the annihilation of the encircled enemy troops in Budapest and the destruction of the enemy tank grouping near Zamol [Zámoly]. On January 3, 1945, while carrying out a combat mission near Nadshat at an altitude of 305, he conducted four ground assaults at the target, as a result of which 2 vehicles and 1 tank were destroyed and up to 10 enemy soldiers and officers were killed. On January 4, 1945, while carrying out a mission with a group of 12 Il-2s near Baina [Bajna], the group of Il-2s was attacked by 30 Me-109s. All enemy attacks were beaten off and the mission was accomplished in an excellent manner. On January 5, 1945, while attacking the encircled enemy troops in Budapest, a direct hit of 2 FAB-250s on a factory was spotted. Three times he conducted ground assaults on enemy troops in the streets of Budapest. On January 11, 1945 the enemy had concentrated a strong tank grouping near Zamol [Zámoly], the objective of which was to break through to the east in one violent blow. Given orders to destroy the enemy tank grouping, Chemerkin displayed exceptional proficiency and valour. As a result of the combined actions with his comrades, the enemy tank grouping’s offensive was frustrated, for which the commander of the 4th Guards Army and front’s Military Council expressed their gratitude. On January 24, 1945, for his excellent combat actions in difficult meteorological conditions to the northeast of height 124 (1 kilometer from the city of Grof), the commander of the 10th Odessa Ground-Assault Aviation Corps expressed his gratitude. For having completed 28 successful combat flights in an Il-2 aircraft, bombing and conducting ground assaults on enemy troops, and for accomplishing the missions near Zamol [Zámoly], in an excellent manner, he deserves to be awarded the Order of the Red Banner. During this period he showed himself an exceptionally sophisticated and disciplined Red Army officer. He knows the technology of the Il-2 aircraft well and operates it competently. During his first combat flights he showed himself fully prepared for combat. He carries out all of his combat missions in a good or excellent manner. He conducted 10 successful combat flights, during which he personally destroyed 4 vehicles, 1 anti-aircraft gun, 2 carts and killed up to 30 enemy soldiers and officers. On November 20, 1944, while flying with a group of 6 Il-2s, he carried out a mission to bomb and attack a concentration of enemy troops near Moidonyas. Despite heavy enemy anti-aircraft fire and fighters the mission was accomplished in an excellent manner. During this flight he personally destroyed 1 vehicle and killed up to 10 enemy soldiers. At the target he conducted four ground assaults. For completing 10 successful combat flights, bombing and conducting ground assaults on enemy troops, he deserves to be awarded the Order of the Red Star.
