Air Force Visor.
Hi everybody !!!
i'm new here and in fact i got interest in by accident after i took a russian cap as a memory from some trip with my girlfriend! I don t know if the cap is a fake or not, if it is real russian or an ukrainian copy or..... Well i translated part of the inside tag wich states : manufacture of caps blah blah kiev, 1990 and something like omega or odessa After having been going through some ressearch site i found that it was an enlisted man airforce cap everything was matching!!! But going through the forum somebody said that 90's caps had an ridiculously oversized crown which mine doesn t have! Can give me a hand on this one please? Human,
The hat appears to be fine. The hat tag matches up with the Odessa factory. 1990 is very late and it might never have been issued. Although these hats were issued and worn until the mid to late 1990s. Enlisted hats never had the very large crowns. Proper issue officer hats did have slightly larger crowns, but the biggest seem to have been private purchase ones. Shawn |

Shawn (as usual) is correct. These caps are typical conscript caps. They were also worn by paratroopers on some occasions although the blue beret was worn more often. The red enlisted infantry cap is becoming slightly harder to come by now and in fact I have yet to see a fake conscripts cap, most of the fakes tend to be officer caps.

Many thanks to all of you !!I didn t get the big crown was for officers only , i thought it was more a question of period.
In addition you are perfectly right about the fact that the cap has not been issued . I think it has never been worn because there is no scratches or any trace of wear on the sweat band. I chosed this cap in Prague among two dozens of others in one of the many sellers that flourishes there. I chose this one because it looked 1/in a good state 2/ looked "real". Some looked too worned out or poorly made such as some fakes i came across in some threads. One regret though, i'd hesitated between this one (cheap) and a black one (i forgot about the piping but it might have been white!?! as far as it does exist ;) ) with some good gold embroderies on the visor and band , gold cord(?) , higher band (which wasn 't white i almost sure maybe black or dark) and ...bigger crown. the price was too high (a bit under 100 euros while mine was maybe 15 e ) and it was a size 60 so slightly too big for my empty head. It had the same rigid martial looking than mine and was , i must admit, much better looking!!! I don 't remember if it had been worn or not but i do remenber it looked "real" to me and that the material was different than mine less thick , higher quality , less rough. I think the seller talked about submarines or something. Mabe this does evocate something for you, tell me i made some big mistake so i can cry my pain out of myself tonight! Ah , i apologize for my english wich is not what is best on the market and if i m difficult to understand. btw , Prague could be a good destination for you "afficionados" cos it s rather cheap to go at least from europe , cheap to stay, cheap to eat there (starting at 3 euros a meal ), pretty girls, nice café terraces , beautifull town (maybe the most in europe) and.......... lots of russian stuff everywhere, most fakes though i think..;) Last edited by CtahhR; 09-17-2013 at 03:15 PM. |

The cap you are describing sounds like an officers naval cap. It would depend on what rank the cap was for. Admirals caps do go for a lot but other officer rank caps do go for a lot less, You can pick them up on Ebay for about $30 (sometimes less). I wouldn't worry about it too much. Until you decide which paticular field you want to collect I wouldn' worry about it too much. When you do decide than you can start tearing your hair out...:)
I have never been to Prague but have heard good things about it - especially the beer...;)

well i don t know too much what im gonna do because noone in my place sells russian stuff and buying out from the internet can be tricky and risky. So if you can mail me some good retailler , some you personnaly trust i ll be gratefull. i m attracted more by uniforms than medal and more by generals than leutnants;) but, because there is a but! i think they are moneywise talking, a bit expensive or if i see something on ebay i m scared to be conned. You re right for the beer |
