Badges Section?

I think it will be good to have another section to the forum: Badges. But it will have to be well organaized since there are so many badges (well over 1000) which are "Official". Maby a divided sub sections will help - like Proffession badges, academy badges, distinction etc.

I agree..I think I need to make the forums a little more unique so there would be no question about what the forum is about. I'm thinking just in case people new to the hobby might visit and want to look around and maybe find some information, it may be easier to offer the forum based on physical descriptions like pinbacks, screwbacks, with suspension.

What do you think?

Art, I think that occasional visitor to the forum will be afraid to ask "stupid" questions...Ithink that a small introduction to the world of Soviet awards is needed, with several "basics" or facts of the trade.

I like the idea of the newbie forum, but I think I'm going to hold off on that until I'm sure we need it. Perhaps if I get many recurring emails on a particular subject I may, or if the memberships get into the double-digits

Regarding badges, we will tailor it towards the advanced collector. I would like to focus on exactly what we need now, so here is what I suggest:

BADGES
for discussion and sharing of information about Soviet Badges. ( I'll edit this to sound a little more robust )

subforums:

Republic Badges ( badges issued by a Soviet Republic.)
Award Badges ( badges issued as awards for good service )
Profession Badges ( badges issued to workers in a specific industry )


Definitely need to work on this more.

Good sub division. By Profession badges I meant "Tank man", Aviator etc.
If we will start with veteran badge, we will need a new forum...there are so many! (and majority of them are unofficial".

I've been giving the badges forum alot of thought. I've been leaning towards holding off on its creation because I think it would be pure graphics and not much information. There are so many badges out there, I think it would turn into a picture posting area and nothing really relevant to military awards. I've got to try and think conservatively with the bandwidth, as all the other forums are really getting graphics heavy. I've been watching the website statistics and the forum is now getting more traffic than the website!

I might change this if I can come to a good forum-imposed size limit for images posted there. Unfortunately, this would force some posters to either compress their image, resize the image, or both. Let's hear some more opinions..

I think that is a wonderful idea, I must have a heap that I do not know anything about and could bore you guys for hours or even days!

I think a badge section is a must. True, there are a lot out there, but you can say the same about the medals.

But then, there's medals, and then there's medals. The same can be said for badges.

Theres a lot of tosh and then there's some interesting badges.

I attache a scan of two KGB badges for example.


They could be dodgy as they do differ from some in books, but as I have seen, there is more than one variation. I could be wrong, and that's where the forum comes in with it's experience.

The Numbers are low.

I think the badge section would be enjoyable and informative, especially as the reference books are poor (my opinion) so let the forum decide with it's experience.

just a thought.
