Re: Fake Orders of Glory

So is the general feeling that this is a tampered with 3rd class or a complete fake, or are more pictures needed to make an accurate assessment?

If you see a 2nd online and think "oh cheap, I'll give it a punt" it will usually mean you are getting a tampered with 3rd or a complete fake.

Don't get me wrong, there are bargains out there, but not with the popular items on such visual display.

If you see a full cavalier set on the auction site for $10, $100, $1000, $10,000 many others have..... and know it is not worth the cash!
I would agree..99% of the way. :) Some orders are especially prone to being faked (for example, the Friendships with the "broken fingers" symptom) and also there is little reason for a real big ticket item (Suvorovs Kutuzovs etc) to be listed on e-pay vs an auction house sale. But also over time we recognize what sellers source from fake mints--there is a list of a dozen or so famous offenders.
For me the 1% exception is when you are really familiar with the subject matter and know what to look for. Being burnt on a fake unfortunately helps because you know what 'watermarks' to look for as well. Enamel color, patina / general tone and wear, eyelet, number writing style, mintmark, and of course those pesky die details are things I look out for. But in some cases the fakes are so well made that I would never buy them on eBay (Partisan medals, Belgrade, etc). Then there are weird cases of "fakes" (or novodels?) being struck using original dies (as is the rumor on Partisan medals) weird 1991 post-Soviet strikes (Defense of Soviet Arctic), as well as unfinished medals stolen from the mint (unnumbered "Defender of Free Russia"). Oy...

Re: Fake Orders of Glory

Currently for sale on e-hell!

Newbies beware, this shouldnt fool anyone but bidding has already started :(

Clearly an altered 3rd class with a digit removed from the front and back of the serial number. I'd guess at 728276.

Re: Fake Orders of Glory

I have come over a collection with some better orders and medals, and I hope it is ok to post pictures here for your comments. (Long since I last was active, but I have been busy with other collectibles the last few years...)

First a Order of Glory II. #41366. I have looked at the mondvor pictures, but don't find a exact die match. 46 mm, and the tips just under 2 mm.

Re: Fake Orders of Glory

I don´t like this one.

According to my database 2nd class Var. 5
min. 24.722, max. 48.795
Clock time: 09:00

Yours show 09:05.
Also there should be a little space between the red enamel ribbon (CLABA) and the base of the tower.

But let´s wait for another oppinion.

best regards
Andreas

I agree.
Wrong die, bad gold wash not matching the general condition of the order.

Gents,

Steer clear of this "beauty" that just popped on the well-known auction site. BIN price is $14,500.00.

Re: Fake Orders of Glory

Hi all!

Was the person engraving this serial number drunk or does this happen more often?
