A very beautiful award indeed. I´d like to know how hard are these orders to obtain.

Merit Order
!Hola Esteban!
The Merit Order is one of the rarest Hungarian awards of the communist time. Of the first grade only 169 have been awarded between 1950 and 1953 (in 1953 this award was abolished, and a one grade award has been introduced), of the second 174, of the third 285, of the fourth grade 745, and of the fifth 1619. The Merit Medal is much more common, 17656 gold, 5290 silver and 5992 bronze have been awarded. I've never seen a first grade MO for sale in Hungary or abroad, of the second and the third grade one-one piece have been sold at an auction in 2004 (the second grade reached a price of 600 USD, the third 400 USD). Merit Medals can be bought without greater difficulty (though in the last years they became very popular among collectors, so they are sold very fast) - for around 50 USD. I am talking here about full sets: with original case, ribbon and mini. Hope could help you with your question, regards, Sandor |

Szervusz Sandor :)
Thanks for your reply. So then it´s not so hard to get the lower grade awards... Makes me wish to get my hands in one of those... However, if they´re sold by 50 USD or so, as you said, how much does the price rises when case and ribbon are included?

One of the most rare items ever awarded. 13 were awarded in 1953, 76 between 1954 and 1956, 30 between 1957 and 1977 and 21 between 1978 and 1990.
Awarded for "Ten or more years of service in building up socialism within the Hungarian Peoples Republic in a heroic manner, standing firm in the consequences of ones action". The award was available for both the military and the civilian sector. In 1964 the award was further included to be awarded to "factories, offices, sections of the armed forces, etc..." This is a 1957 issue piece |
