300 years of St Petersburg
I just found this one and though I'm sure many of you have seen it already (since 2003), it was a new and interesting one to me (and nothing turned up on my searches of the forum). The government's penchant for pre-Soviet or Imperial-looking medals is definitely evident here.:)

Re: Medal "In Memory Of The 300th Anniversary Of Saint Petersburg".
Here's a document to Marija Shaevna Solomonova dating from 21st April 2004. The document is numbered 254413 which is in the first half of the 670,000 of these Medals produced for 130.56 rubles per piece (89.4 rubles for the medal and 41.16 for the award box)
I spent about 3 years looking for one of these Medals before I found one and didn't buy the first one I saw. I since found a very cheap source so I now have 7 of these Medals in the collection.

Definitely not as rare as we once thought.

Re: Medal "In Memory Of The 300th Anniversary Of Saint Petersburg".
The Medal "In Memory Of The 300th Anniversary Of Saint Petersburg" (Медаль «В Память 300-Летия Санкт-Петербурга») was created by Decree 210 of 19th February 2003 and was cancelled by Decree 1099 of 7th September 2010.
670,000 were produced, but not all were awarded. #8 in the collection took a while to join the others but that is due to a little rule I generally follow. Whenever I purchase something, I will generally roll on buying the same item for the same price but once I find it for less I don't go back to paying more. The previous 6 cost under £10, #8 was under $10 - getting closer to the original production price. These Medals have been outrageously copied/faked since being cancelled as State Awards in 2010. The quality of those is atrocious but often sell for $20-$30 a piece.

These 25 are new arrivals, which don't include the previous 8.
Prices are now around $5-7 delivered.

What is the purpose of having 25+ of the same, unnumbered anniversary award?

Re: Medal "In Memory Of The 300th Anniversary Of Saint Petersburg".
Come to think of it, what's the purpose of any of it?
"The hobby of collecting includes seeking, locating, acquiring, organizing, cataloging, displaying, storing, and maintaining items that are of interest to an individual collector." This is just the beginning, I've found a source that can continue to supply these in number for a very reasonable price. There are many other unnumbered awards in the collection of which considerably more are put away/displayed. Here, I am simply illustrating that this particular Jubilee Medal is not by any means obscure, that fellow collectors should not knee-jerk into paying over the odds, whilst at the same time be wary of circulating fakes. All that said, there are a number of coins in the collection which have been "sought, located, acquired, organised, catalogued and stored" by the thousands, even though they are the same denomination, date and produced at the same mint. The line between collecting and hoarding can get very blurred. Coins are also not quite so easy to display publicly, although I have done from time to time and will be again soon.
