Nice Sergio!

I really like the Labour grouping with the motherhood awards and your colleciton of Veteran of Labour Variations. I would have a very enjoyable evening looking through all of your collection!

Cute cat too!

Re: How To Store And Display Awards.

I'm still after the 1000th Anniversary of Kazan. 300th Saint Petersburg was supposed to be the rare one but there are 7 in the collection. Must be looking in the wrong places!

Re: How To Store And Display Awards.

Now here's a way to display Soviet awards. Get a set of these and decorate a cake! The chocolate used here looks a bit grey but I'm sure it'd be fun for all with the right ingredients.

The "Double Red Banner Double Chocolate Birthday Cake"... and why not Red Stars rather than roses on a wedding cake?

I'd advise storing them in the fridge or in the stomach - you decide.

Death to the white chocolates!

Re: How To Store And Display Awards.

With the collection completely spiralling out of control and the vast variety of shapes, sizes and suspension types I've been seriously considering a way in which to make a system to store all the (non-documented) awards in a uniform matter.

I'm guessing everyone here is familiar with the "slabs" that coins and other items get encapsulated in, which are generally a uniform size no matter what the size of the contents. This sort of uniform storage solution has had me thinking of something similar for awards for some years - envelopes are only really the solution for awards of a certain suspension and size. So I've been thinking of creating "slab" type storage for awards.

I was wondering if anyone out there has seriously considered (or put into practice) the use of 3D printing to create a uniform storage solution?

I'm thinking of maybe making a design that externally has a uniform dimension but internally can be individually printed to fit each award. With the added bonus that an awards name, number, recipient, etc. could be printed in or on the "slab".

Having stackable or interlocking archival slabs would not only save a vast about of space but also remove the risk of damage to the items. The universal size would also aid in the interchanging of items out on display.

Re: How To Store And Display Awards.

I use medal sleeves. I then place them in trading card, 9 per page, pages and put them in wide 4" notebooks. I have 6 notebooks totally full.

Re: How To Store And Display Awards.

Numismatics and Phaleristics seem to coexist, so yes slabs are great--but they take up a lot of space. Medal sleeves are a great solution, but the ones on the market are not PVC-free. It's not an issue with silver medals, but over time these medal sleeves will permanently discolor and cause verdigris on brass medals.

What I would really like is medal sleeves made from SAFLIP material (hard clear bendable plastic, PVC-free).. I contacted the folks who manufacture SAFLIP coin flips in the past and they said they would be open to creating medal sleeves--for a large enough order. The other option is, buying the material by the foot (the SAFLIP folks sell it this way) and a heat sealer...
