Some folks like their medals nice and shiny. Perhaps you can trade the cleaned one for a dirty one.
When I clean my medals I use warm water with a little dish soap and a very soft brush, like a worn out toothbrush, and scrub very lightly. Then a quick buff/dry with a paper towel. Works well, and the patina isn't affected.

Hello,

one guy (not trustfulness for me) showed me this medal for Combat Service. As he said me, it was found in scraps of a german uniform (probably a war prey). When I showed these photos to other collector (we wanted to try identification of the holder), he pronounced that this item is probably fake (a suspicious numbering).

What opinion do you have?

I'm sorry for bad photos.

Thank you!

They are both good, and the loss isn't that great...

Rocketscientist - they both look good to me. Don't feel too bad about your lost patina: as I've said here before, we may love that tarnish, but some now deceased veteran of the Great Patriotic War may just be smiling down on you for shining up something he surely treasured more and more as he grew older. In short, we may not shine them, but he almost certainly did when he owned them. In short, what we treasure would be seen as a sign of slovenly turn-out in militaries the world over... ;)

Some more info please...

Mintaur - can you give us a couple more pieces of info?

- what is the average thickness of the medal to the nearest 1/10 mm?

- what is the outside diameter of the suspension ring 1/10 mm?

- what is the weight - maybe to the nearest 1/10 gram?

There are those here who know their "handwriting" very well, but some of these quantitative measurements can reinforce determinations when taken with the elusive but telling qualitative observations. In short, I think if the ring is too large or the medal too thin, that may settle the issue immediately.

Also, on the obverse, describe the hilt and type of enamel/lacquer. both of these could nail it immediately as wrong, or contribute somewhat to a "good".

Hard to tell from the photo. Is the sabre hilt straight or curved?

Actually, at first glance based on the small size of the ring and the handengraving, I'm inclined to say it's good. Better photos (and/or measurements) are needed, however.

I'm sorry but I had the medal in my hands only once without possibility of measuring:(

The ring seems such as in case of medals with similar numbering.

The sabre hilt looks curved.

MinTaur,

This medal should be thicker than later issues (it is noticeable even without calipers). The ring seems small enough, although I have seen later issues with small rings. I am not overly keen on the handwriting, especially the "N" sign.

Is it enamel or laquer in the letters?

I was talking with the collector. There is enamel in the text and the medal weighs about 22,22 grams as he said to me.

The handwriting is suspicious for more collectors who saw the medal but there is a question how it looks on medals which were marked in the same time (a similar number).

That weight is a good sign...

That weight of 22.25g is a good sign. I have weights on more than 50 CSM's. My four early sub-200k pieces are all 22g +- ~0.5g. All my T2V1 to T2V4 pieces are essentially 17g to 19.5g. (all weights without suspension, but with soldered ring if still present)

Granted that there are other factors, but the small suspension ring and the heavier weight are pointing this in a good direction. With the higher weight, this medal will certainly be thicker all. The enamel instead of lacquer also makes me think it might be good.
