Newbie

Hello & a Happy NY to everyone,

Im new to the forum and thought it would be good to say hello.

As an intro, the collecting seed was planted nearly 10 years ago when I visited Moscow and then worked in Uzbekistan for a year.

Hope you guys (M & F) will be able to help me out so I may benefit from your wisdom and carefully expand my collection.

This may not be the best place to post this, but there wasn't a New Members' Section.

Thanks Note Bene for the tip to join the Forum

Mark.

When it comes to Soviet and other communist country medals and orders, you can do no better than this forum. I'm sure if it weren't for this forum, many of us would be totally ignorant of so many aspects of this great hobby.

Welcome and enjoy!

Thanks for the welcome.

I decided to collect Russian Orders & Medals as a passtime when I was in Tashkent working after I came across a set of 14 Soviet postcards dating from 1973 which depicted 10 orders & 4 medals.

Since returning to the UK I bought the 'Orders & Medals Bible' and found out there were mant more so I decided to try and supplement my collection based on the contents of the book. I know there are some I can only wish to own, but that's part of the mystery and fun of collecting I suppose....you never know what might turn up.....

I worked in Samarkand & Bukhara building new International Arival & Departure Terminals at their Airports.

We also overlayed the concrete runway with stone asphat in Bukhara.

I also spent a short time in Tashkent.

It was a tough time but I really enjoyed it. Learned to speak a little Russian but it has worn off now as I don't have need to use it much.

What about you?

May as well say hey here, too....

I've been a history buff for a couple years now (keep in mind I'm 19, freshman at university (History major, of course)), and about a year or two ago my dad was in France and came across an old Soviet sub or ship or something where they were selling off some of the pins, etc...he picked me up the badge I believe the Captain or whatever the equivilant naval rank is wore on their cap, and that's kind of perked an interest that's recently developed alot more as I continue on with schooling. Wow that was a long sentence.

To be honest, I don't really know where to begin with what to look for, where to look for it, etc, but I guess that's what the forum's for .

До свиданъя,

Stu

Hi Stu,

Welcome to the Forum!!!! You have found here the right place to be as a Soviet or East Block countries items collector and history fan. Just take the time to use the "Search" button of the homepage and you will see thousands of gates opening!!!

BTW, you are mentioning your Dad who "was in France and came across an old Soviet sub or ship or something where they were selling off some of the pins" : By chance do you know where it was ? Do you have more details ?

Again, Welcome!!!

Cheers.

Ch.

Hi, Newbie question.....

Hi,

I thought i'd introduce myself and ask my first question all at once. Here goes, my name is Tom, I'm 22 and I'm studying for Ma in "War, Media and Modernity". I'm currently researching for a paper based around propaganda, and I want to use two examples of medals as propaganda tools, e.g. The order of Lenin, and the order of Alexander Nevsky.

So, my question is: Do you consider the First type order of Lenin to be a concious propaganda statement?, in that the Tractor stands for communist ideals and the prominence of Lenin's head above (and larger than the tractor) shows/stands for the supreme control of the state, as well as Lenin's control of the the state and therefore the people? Or am I reading too much into this?

All the best,
Tom
