Order of Lenin Type 5 Var. 2

Just curious what the value of a "no dimple" variation of lenin is worth. I haven't seen many of these on the market and haven't been able to find one lately. I have to imagine it is worth a bit more than it's brother (type 5, var. 1) as it seems to be a hell of a lot more rare. Anyone have a feel for this or recall seeing one for sale recently?

I saw these for sale recently at the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. The guy had many foreign medals for sale, as well as 7 Orders of Lenin. Most appeared to be Type 6, but he had these two Type 5 v1's - including one without a suspension. Asking price was $850 apiece, but I probably could've gotten any or all of them for around $450-500 range. Is this a good price for these? I've got several pics that show more detail, if anyone is interested.

Dave,

I think that $850 for a single piece, even an authentic one, is perhaps a bit too high, as I believe it's still possible to find this var. for about $670-$700.
On the other hand, $450-$500 would be an excellent price.

They seem ok to me but better wait for the experts.

Best,

Dolf

Here are the other Orders of Lenin that he had for sale. Any info on quality and pricing would be appreciated!

Dolf-

How much does the quality/condition of the ribbon matter? Some of them had excellent ribbons, while others were rather tattered. Also, how much variation is there in price b/w Type 5 and Type 6? Are lower serial #s considered more desireable and hence more expensive?

Wow...Wish I had seen these when I was there!!!. I'm no expert, but I've noticed that the MM (Mint Mark) seems to be in different places compared to the rivets on the back of a few of the medals. I haven't seen that before.

Welcome to the Forum by the way.

Orders of Lenin - Istanbul

It looks like he has two Type 5 v1 (#71207 & 88959), two Type 6 v1 (stamped # below rivets - #232620 & #299564), two Type 6 v1 (stamped # above rivets - #332950 & #366870) and one Type 6 v1 (engraving tool above rivets - #444354).

Here's a picture of how they were displayed in the window, along with some of his other medals for sale.

Dave,

The condition of the ribbons has no influence whatsoever on the price. Althought some collectors would prefer a piece with a more clean ribbon, plenty of others would prefer those with more worn ribbons (hey, part of the history of a piece after all!).
For others that wouldn't mind at all, only the condition of the piece (enamel, head of Lenin, etc) would count.
I think that when judging the overall condition of such piece that is the only thing that in fact counts in any eventual minor variation on the final price of two similar pieces (same Type and Var.)
On the other hand, lower S/Ns are a much more important factor on a variation on the final price of two similar pieces!

I think that Type 5 and Type 6 can sell for about the same price, I've seen either one or the other Type sell more expensive than the other, so...
T5V2 on the other hand is rarer and usually more expensive.
But from the pics you posted on Post #59, all pieces seem to be of T6V1, except the very last one, which seems to be a T6V2.

All pieces seem perfectly genuine and in good condition in my humble opinion, both the T5 or the T6.

Hope it helps.

Happy hunting,

Dolf

Medalklector,

Yeah, I wish I'd seen them when I was there too
I'm kidding, last time I was in Istanbul, it was a very longtime ago, and those days I didn't even feel interested in Medals. Maybe would I have seen his display on his window I would have had started collecting right there, who knows?... :D

The MM in different places is absolutely normal on Lenin T6V1 and T6V2, as well as the location of the S/Ns.

Best,

Dolf

Prices?

So would ~$500 apiece be a pretty fair price to pay for any/all of these medals? The only real flaw I could see was on the T5v1 with the ribbon - looked like a piece of grey enamel near his face was chipped, as well as a piece of the red enamel up near the "LENIN" at the top.

Appreciate the help! Maybe I'll take orders for the next time I go out there! :D
