It's a FAKE!!!
Hi all, especially Alexei
Thanks for suggesting having a look at the cover of the Vienna document. I am now sure it is bad. I have posted a picture to let you see what I found but it doesn't come out very well. But basically there should be shading on the edges of the globe in the crest. This is missing from the Vienna award card. Also the lettering is not distinguishable and the star at 12 o'clock is too small. So obvious once you start looking! The Budapest document passes all of these scrutinies so I think it is probably OK, but will scan the stamp for another opinion. McL |

What do you think about this document. The text at the bottom of the coat of arms is quite detailed (you can read it), but the shadow lines at the globe are missing.

Bad news, all information inside was inserted with the intent to deceive. The document's stamp reads "HQ, 2nd Belorussian Front" which it probably should read "Group of Soviet Forces, Germany" by 1948, but there can always be an exception. The nail in the coffin however is the signature block for a regional commissariat official. The commissariat signature block does not synch with the unit stamp.

Alfred,
I find the color of the document somewhat suspicious (artificial chemical aging). Marc |

The reddish hue I attribute to the scan. It is probably a legitimate late post-war document based on the number of republics depicted on the seal of the USSR and the fine detailing of the seal. Someone then turned it into a WWII-era appearing piece. Fakers can buy blank late post-war documents for a few dollars a piece, they "age" them, fill them out, put a neat stamp on and sell the document for much more.

Desantnik,
I think it's possible that this is the actual color of the document (other colors, including the red pencil are not distorted). Also in this case I am not so confident the document itself is original, just look at the texture of that paper. Looks weird... Alexei |

Yes, I agree if the document is that color and not a scan distortion, I don't like it. Yet another reason I don't like making calls on things I can't touch. The weight/feel of the paper could also give confirm/deny whether it's good or not.
