Is the serial number raised? It looks like it's applied with solder.

I'd have to say it's probably bogus or extremely rare.

The larger picture shows the lower third of the medal as lighter in color. Is this just where the light fell during photography or was an existing serial number buffed out?

The medal dings near the serial number look good, though.

Strange.

Re: Bravery medal serial number

Matthijs,

As I said before, very unusual set of stamps, to say the least. It is not a duplicate, the digits should be markedly smaller.
Please post a pic of the FRONT of this medal.

I'm not sure, but I think the number is stamped not raised. The problem is that I want to buy this set so I do not have it in my hands.

Re: Bravery medal serial number

What's the "ear" look like on this one? Is this supposed to be a wartime issue? I've got to say that I think the numbers are a little too small for an original issue BM in that SN range. I've a few in that area, and they tend to have bigger stamped numbers. It also almost looks like they are stamped a tiny bit too high up on the medal from the bottom. I'm traveling with a limited internet connection, so I can only look briefly.

It does look raised, doesn't it. But who would put a raised number on a medal?
But what is this I've circled in red?

Matthijs,

I've sifted through 100s of scans, and I couldn't find digit punches such as these.

What you circled in red looks like it might be the shadow of a serial number rubbed out, and it also looks to be in the correct position for a 7-digit serial number. Like I said above, the BM's I've seen in that 700k range tend to have larger digits positioned a bit lower than what those photos have. I don't like it, and I don't say that as often as maybe I should.

As an addendum, look in the "for sale" section at the two BM's ANZAC has recently posted (one is 800k and the other 900k) to get an idea of what I'm talking about (larger digits positioned lower on the reverse).

Re: Bravery medal serial number

However it was done, the "7" looks exactly the same. A punched # from the mint would have all individual numbers punched. The other numbers do not look standard as pointed out above.

Thanks for all your replies!!! The seller sent me a picture of the front of the medal. Lets see what you think.

What do you think, should I buy this set?
