The uniform is a captain of the medical services of the MVD, Ukraine SSR.
Paramedic or medical unit of the MVD firefighters/rescue personnel, 1970s-1980s service, visor cap marked ODESSA 1988. Awards include The Badge of Honor, The Medal for a Veteran of Labor, The Jubillee Medal for 70 Years of the Armed Forces of the USSR, The Medal for the 1500th Year Anniversary of Kiev, The Medal for 10 Years of Irreproachable Service in the Armed Forces of the USSR (MVD) and the Medal for a "Participant in the Liquadation of Effects of the Accident at the ChAES (Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant)". This guy was Ukrainian. He received Chernobyl medal but It's doubtful this guy was first on scene. That is because the Kiev medal was given primarily to Kiev citizens - and Kiev is not that near the nuclear plant. On the other hand, this medal was given to almost anyone that was involved, and I do know that personnel from the Kiev area was drafted to the rescue and post-disaster work. He also received two graduation badges - the standard intermediate level officer badge and a 1980s medical university badge. Doc Last edited by CtahhR; 03-10-2013 at 05:58 AM. |

Re: Medical Uniforms and Insignia
Nice set. The M69's look so much better with the parade belt and awards.

Re: Medical Uniforms and Insignia
Here is a recent acquisition that I was very pleased to find:
The M-69 service uniform of a medical branch Colonel with sewn-on ribbons that reflect valorous service in the Great Patriotic War. I feel certain that the Orders of Lenin, Red Banner, and at least one Order of the Red Star were awards for long service. But the ribbons also show the award of the Order of the Patriotic War, first and second class, and the medal for combat merit. This was one fighting medical officer ! The tunic (which came with the carmine-piped breeches) has three perfectly aligned holes for badges, and I placed what I thought would be appropriate badges on the tunic. The Hero star is a PIN-BACK copy. I just wanted to add it to a uniform, and since it is pin-back, I did not need to create a hole where none existed. So no uniform was harmed in the making of this post ! :D |

Re: Medical Uniforms and Insignia
I would expect the badges to be in a horizontal line. A diagonal line was reserved only for the orders. I may be wrong, but this tunic may be an old M58 parade tunic that was used as an everyday one after 1969. Could be period modification. The material also seems to be suggesting that. It would be good to check the dates on the buttons.

Re: Medical Uniforms and Insignia
I think that Al-Muel may have been exactly correct.
It turns out the the reverse of the buttons is date "60"! So this tunic apparently began life as a dress tunic under the 1959 regulations, which could indicate that the holes in the tunic were originally for the wear of orders. In looking at the interior of the shoulders it is clear that there were at one time another set of shoulder boards on the jacket. So it may be that this was a jacket with dress shoulder boards and, perhaps when a promotion came in later years, it was made into an everyday service tunic by replacing the lower rank dress boards with the service style shoulder boards. And by that time the collar tabs with gold frames had become standard for the daily service wear. |

Colours used to represent the medical branch...
What colors were used to represent medical in the Soviet Army, and when?
The reason I ask is that I have seen medical uniforms piped in red and others piped in carmine, like the one I just posted in the medals forum area. |

Paul,
When medical staff was attached to a specific unit, they were wearing that unit standard uniform, albeit with medical attributes. Marc |

Re: Colors used to represent the medical branch...
If we are talking m69 uniform regulations there are 2 colors.
In 1969 when the new uniform was launched medical vet's and administration retained there carmine (pinkish) color. However this was quickly changed in 1980. This is why you find different colors or red (2) in use on the m69 uniforms.

Re: Colors used to represent the medical branch...
Thanks for the replies. I was caught off guard with my new uniform, as I have never before encountered the carmine color on a Soviet uniform. I thought that it was something pretty rare.
Anyway, the uniform comes complete with riding trousers(piped), visor, and tunic. All with the carmine color. It makes a very attractive color scheme, on the khaki service uniform. If there is interest, I can take a few pics. |

Sure put some pictures on!
Love the look of these rarer m69 uniforms. It is not an ultra rare uniform but they are scares.
