The buttons are NOT original - just checked - they are 8 years later than the cap itself and as such cannot be original to it. Most likely the seller didn't have original general's buttons, so he used what was at hand.

So most likely Doug is right.

the cap was made in 79 see inside picture the buttons are of 78 made so they are date wise correct.

i have looked at the steep frond ,, it is rather vertical just a slight bit more than other ca[s i have.
there is no trace what so ever for a hounerguard crown badge?
and the cap was worn for sure ,, it has a slight wear on the diamond.
it was not worn much but certainly was worn.

what would general buton's cost and where would i get them from if i needed to replace them ?

On the pic, the date looks like 70 to me.

There may be no trace of a badge on the crown, because:
a)it wasn't attached there;
b)it was embrioded one, sewn on to the cap, and thus didn't leave much of a trace...

honor unit

What type of Honor Unit would have a black cap band? I assumed that, with the exception of the army cavalry honor unit, that army honor units would have had a red band?

check E for generals cap buttons, they show up now and then. Also, i can't say i like the yellow-gold cords, from the hats i have had in they should be more of a metal golden color; but that might just be lighting in this photo. I think its an OK generals cap that was restored/rebuilt, etc. Not a big deal, its a nice cap ( but smart to get the original buttons).

You are right - didn't think of that. Probably no honour guards wore black bands. Altough there were AF honour guards.

Sewing could leave no trace - depends on how it was done... But most likely it wasn't there.

btw. Is the cap band VELVET?
