Badge "1st Cavalry Army".

Ok, so the photo below is a bit blurry but I hope someone has seen it in the Ukraine. I know its located in the Ukraine since the second photo is of me on this statue back in 1991. Problem is, I have no idea what the statue is all about or exactly where it is.

Help!

I too have seen this in person. It is rather impressive and comes out of nowhere during the monotonous ride from Kiev to Lviv. Although the picture is labelled Zhitomir, I seem to remember it being a lot closer to Lviv, or Lvov as the Russian variant. There is also a neat castle one can tour a few kilometers west of it.

I don't know the story behind it, but it is somehow related to the 1st horse army. Strangely enough, they weren't very succesful around Lwów when this was the correct variant of the city name...

There was once a miniature of this statue for sale in the very same place as this pin, and it was signed "to the veterans of 1st horse army".
I still regret not buying it.

I felt guilty outbidding you at the last moment but I just had to have this "order". Since I had a photo of myself sitting on the actual statue, it was a no-brainer of what price I would pay for it. I am just glad that you didn't feel the same way. Dziekuje!

No problem! In fact I considered the starting bid a bit too high at first, but I've been already in a spending mood at that moment. But still, with my low salary and latest purcheses, I wasn't ready to pay more than You offered. And after all - I am glad it anded up in good hands.:)

It is a monument to the 1st Cavalry Army which was arguably the most famous of the Red Army сavalry units. The unit was also known as Budyonny's Cavalry Army. It is really an impressive monument, though a little worse for the wear.
