Re: North Korean militaria (uniforms)

This first picture shows a Marshal with a General at either side. All have the Order of Kim Il Sung in their large arrays of awards. The General on the right of the photograph also has 3 Commemorative Medals "Military Review". At no point during the half hour long broadcast did this General open his eyes and that fact coupled with his strange movements leads me to believe that he is blind.

The second picture shows just to the right of the first picture with from left to right A minister, a General, Three Marshals and General Kim Jong-Un. All four uniformed officers have Hero Stars and Orders Of Kim Il Sung along with dozens of other awards. The Minister and the young Kim are only wearing their Flag badges.

The third picture shows why it can be so easy to collect DPRK awards, not a single person there has less than 6 awards and with that number of people it soon adds up. This really shows how common DPRK awards can be.

Re: Post 77

The third picture I have no comment on other than they are officers.

They are actually dancers in a military-themed production.

And by their rank also officers. I don't know if you have to be an officer to be a dancer but those are. The strange wrist decorations are probably the DPRK equivalent of "musician" uniforms. Rather imperial looking with the swords too.

Re: North Korean militaria (uniforms)

I don't think that they are officers in the true military sense.
I'm of the belief that the dancers are performing one of the countless number of patriotic stage productions that feature the military. In fact, most of the DPRK theatrical productions likely feature the military in some way.

I think that the "uniforms" are actually the production costumes. It looks like they modified the standard DPRK officer uniforms and added red cuffs and other ornamentation to make the costumes flashier. The standard uniform would be pretty dull fare.

Here is a photo of a DPRK military band, which appears to wear the basic (and theatrically uninteresting) army uniform.

Green is the colour for the security agencies in DPRK: police, popular guard... The double-breasted tunic and pointed collar patches are typical of the special parade uniform (honor guard, musicians). In fact the dancing girls of the previous picture wore an enhanced and sexiest version of this uniform (with the red piping of the army).

Ah, then they are indeed modified uniforms, but modified actual uniforms.
I'm sure that they will be a much-sought after ensemble some day when the DPRK is gone. :o

Here are a pair of stills from a film shown on BBC Four.....
Picture 1 - YES PLEASE!
Picture 2 - Already in the collection.

Even during this rather dated parade the Medal "For Military Merits" and Order Of The National Flag 3rd Class are omnipresent.

Re: North Korean militaria (uniforms)

Here are a pair of pictures of uniformed females of the DPRK.

Notice the green insignia in the "unfocused" part of the first picture and is it just me or do those ushankas look reinforced? Mine always get really misshaped no matter what I do.

Re: North Korean militaria (uniforms)

Looks like they've done something to them... The ushankas that is, hah.

An old Chechenya veteran told me that soaking the ushanka in warm water, and form it on a piece of wood was the best method, but that's SSSR ushankas.

I really don't know with the DPRK synthetic Nordsjø-pels material. Vinylon of some kind?
I've actually never seen a DPRK ushanka of the modern kind that has been "out of shape".

Re: Democratic People's Republic Of Korea Uniforms In Wear.

Here is a rather strangely edited picture.

Nevertheless it shows a Double Hero Of Labour in September 1961. This unidentified Hero was awarded for merits in the reconstruction of the industry of the DPRK.

Images like this make me wonder just how many of these were awarded during the combative stage and then in the 1953-60 period. Just wish the Hero Of Labour numbered <150 in the collection could be researched.
