Just think of the orders and medals arranged in the regular fashion, just tilted! So the order of precedence is is followed, with the superior decoration to its own right in relation to inferior ones, and going top-down for multiple rows.

The uniform reg books have some decent illustrations showing some variations.

I can assure you that officers did definately wear their awards diagonally. There is a picture of one such officer on the cover of the Comprehensive Guide to Soviet Orders and Medals; there are many, many more such photos as evidence.

Here is a thread with a great Air Force uniform with awards displayed diagonally; it might help give you some ideas for yours:

I really like the diagonal placement, myself. I'm not aware of any other militaries that wear awards like that (although they could well be out there).
you will notice though, mikhail is wearing an M49

i dont' think the diagonal placement is appropriate on the M69 however, this woudl be a decent point to bring up...

latinmajorac,

For lack of specific editions of the uniform regulations spelling out when it was authorized or not authorized, I think it was mostly a matter of how to best fit all the decorations on the uniform. There are lots of examples of post-1949 uniforms with decorations worn diagonally ... the only criteria I can think of that precludes it is the lack of a fold-down open collar.

diagonal medals

are OK on an M69 until 1972 when they went horizontal. So technically you shouldn't have something like a 30 year GPW anniversary as part of a diagonal mount.

I've attached some pics of diagonal awards being worn with the M69 uniform from "Военная одежда Вооруженных сил СССР и России 1917-1990" (an official history of uniform regs). I thought the illustration of a woman wearing diagonal awards was interesting (they seem to go under her jacket). M69 are the last uniforms shown with awards like this, however.

I do have issues of Soviet Military Review magazine from as late as 1977 that show photos of awards being worn diagonally. Seems to have been more common in the Navy.

i stand corrected! however, i don't think the diagonal display would look as good on the single breasted 'business suits' of th M69 army uniforms for example. the navy double breasted look good, but it seems to me it would look funny on a single breasted!

just an opinion

This is what I was looking for!!!!

This is great I just pos this, this was sos fast. Thanks, this is exactly the info I have been looking for. And I guess 20 years in three branches of the military and being on a military drill team paid off. Without knowing for sure, I dressed my soviet AF uniform the way I "thought" it should be done, and dernit, I was right, this confirms what I was thinking.

Now, I have to dissassemble 12 ribbons and reattach them to the ribbon bars I bought. I had to wait to know I was doing it right, I am just not looking forward to it.

This thread confirms I have a good display, thanks,

Phillip

PS Would a military officer have civilian labor awards???

The badge of honour also includes military achievments ("national defense").

ribbon bar

Could this bar be from the WW2 era?
It does have 3 WW2-era awards on it. If the center ribbon is a OG3, like precedence dictates it should be then the bar is WW2. Even if the middle ribbon is a VoG and is out of place the bar still could be considered almost WW2-era, right?
So I'm OK with the ribbons, and the wear certainly seems like it could be 60 plus years old.
But is the mounting method that old? The metal ribbon-holder/pin system I've seen from the current period back to the 60s at least.
Anyone think this could be from WW2?

There is NO WAY to know from this picture. It could be WW2 or last month, after some aging. If, on the other hand, it's from the veteran, family, ot you have a picture of the awardee with this very same ribbon bar, it is another story.
