Webster's definition of rationalize:

"to apply the principles of scientific management to (as an industry or its operations) for a desired result (as increased efficiency)"

Rationalize is the verb, rationalization is the noun.

A-ha. Never heard of this meaning--perhaps because it is a "chiefly British" use (so says American Heritage Dictionary).
