Re: Order "People's Liberty 1941-1944".

Here is a 1st Class Type 2. The most common 1st Class by far. Very often found with the wrong ribbon.

Here is a late (c1985) Type 4 2nd Class with a smaller kolodka. The quality is very low. Soft "enamel", glued together with rather sloppy workmanship.

Here is a nice, tidy, early suspension, cased 2nd Class.

Re: Order "People's Liberty 1941-1944".

Not unissued but awarded posthumously. Awarded to Ilija Georgiev Chaushev on 12th February 1952.

Ilija Chaushev was one of the first and most influential Partisans of the struggle in Bulgaria. Born on 2nd March 1914 in Batak. He took the Partisan name "Bor'o" as leader of the Batak Partisan Detachment. The Batak Partisan Detachment was founded by the brothers Ilija and Angel "B'l'o" (born 28th August 1903) Chausev, brothers Nikola "Stefan" (born 20th October 1905) and Georgi "Asen" (born 1st April 1911) Cholakov and Pet'r Nejchev "Kiro" (born 17th April 1898) and their first Partisan action took place on 2nd September 1941 (before Bulgaria joined the Axis). This first action was an armed raid on the Police forces holding the Communist activist Todor Kolarov "Goran". During the raid two policemen were killed and Kolarov was "liberated". Kolarov also joined the ranks of the Batak Partisan Detachment, later becoming the Political Commissar of the Georgi Zhechev Detachment. The Batak Partisan Detachment soon grew in number and later became the founding part of the Rodopi Partisan Detachment "Anton Ivanov" on 14th February 1943.

The Batak's Partisan activity is legendary amongst Bulgarian Partisans and was well known at the time, inspiring other Bulgarians to join Partisan units with the "Anton Ivanov" growing to three digit membership despite being heavily pursued and suffering heavy losses. One famous member of the "Anton Ivanov" was later Chief Of General Staff Of The Bulgarian Army, Minister Of Internal Affairs and Vice President Of The People's Republic Of Bulgaria, Author Atanas Semerdzhiev "Tsvetan" who has been key in preserving the story of not only Chaushev but the Batak. Many of his books record Chaushev's activity.

One account tells of how the unit had to go searching for food and fell into an ambush. The unit suffered a fatality and Ilija Chaushev was wounded but managed to escape capture and return to the hideout. On their return were simply asked "So where is the food?".

Although Chaushev and the original Bataks were said to be "the bravest of the brave" that did not save them from all falling in combat with Tsarist forces.

Georgi Angelov Cholakov "Asen" fell on Mount T'rvanitsa on 22nd February 1944.
Nikola Angelov Cholakov "Stefan" fell in Krichim on 1st March 1944.
The brothers Chaushev "Bor'o" and "B'l'o" fell together in Bratsigovo Region on 10th March 1944.
Pet'r Margelov Nejchev "Kiro" fell on Mount Mirchovitsa on 14th March 1944.
The "liberated" Todor Angelov Kolarov "Goran" fell in Plovdiv on 7th April 1944.

The death of the Chaushevs is reported in detail. Ilija was leading a group of c140 on a raid when they were ambushed by about c400 Police and Anti-Partisans. The partisans were taken by surprise from three sides and a great number of Partisans fell without a chance to react. The older brother Angel was hit first and wounded in the leg as Ilija quickly tried to take control of his unit in the surprise situation. Almost as soon as Angel was hit the commander and younger brother Ilija was hit by a round in the throat. Blood fountained from his throat instantly and Angel immediately threw himself at his younger brother's throat to halt the bleeding. Angel was then in the same open position in which Ilija had been hit and was then hit by repeated rounds. Both brothers died together, each one trying to save the other.

After the Soviet occupation of Bulgaria and Partisans being released, returning to their homes and communication simpler the Chaushev's grandmother waited at home for news of her grandsons. She had been a survivor of the Batak Massacre, with a large scar from a scimitar across her chest and had a large gold coin offered as reward for any returning Partisan who could give her news of her grandsons' survival. The Chaushev legend records that she died in July 1945, sat in a chair with the gold coin in her hand, still waiting for the news that would never come.

This seems to be a rather low award for Ilija's actions and how it is not in the Batak Museum amazes me. He also has a Factory in his home town named after him.
