For my two cents...

I'd definately pay more for a Umatalova-awarded HSL than one awarded for pig farming back in the 70's. It's not the rarity (which they would be rarer, since she has given out fewer) but it's the novelty of it. I think it would be very interesting to have in the collection.

I was just scanning a group I picked up recently to put up on my website. It belonged to a General Major from the Ukraine. He retired in the late 1970's, but I guess Miss Umatalova (or is that 'Comrade Umatalova'???) liked him enough to present him with the "Zhukov Centeniary Medal". The document is pretty flimsy, made of card about 2/3 as thick as the original documents. Instead of being a kind of 'yellowish' color on the outside, it's maroon (or pink?) though it still has the lettering like an actual Soviet award. Interesting to note is that the medal inside the document is actually a photograph of a real medal, instead of a drawing.

I would definitely pay more for a HSL awarded by Umalatova, given that it is original. By "more", I mean more than an unissued HSL or one that was given for something like pig farming in the 1970's, as Dave beautifully put it. :)

Become yourself a HSL

Gentleman,

did you ever think about the possibility to become yourself a authentic HSL? For example Dave Schwind: He might become the first officer in the US-Navy, who will be a "HERO OF SOCIALIST LABOUR". You might ask: For what? That's easy: "For outstanding achievements in researching SU-awards and presenting them at the internet." For example Mahdi Bseiso: He might become the first citizen of Jordania, awarded a genuine HSL "for outstanding achievements in trading SU-awards for consumer-friendly prices". It is my personal conviction, that the achievments for the Soviet Union (or the memory of the SU) of these 2 gentlemen to become a true HSL, are much higher, than of any of these pig farmers in southern Russia, who run around with HSL, 3 Lenins and 5 RB of Labour.

Christian-

Good thought!!! Anyone out there a good friend of hers who could nominate me??? ;) Maybe not a HSL, but how 'bout a RBL? That would be pretty cool... Imagine what the guys on my ship would think about that! Of course, I could always say it was for pig farming... ;) My wife might object of course... When I was stationed in Asia, I was offered membership to a southeast asian country's royal orders. It even came with a cool medal! The starting price for 'admission' was $2500, with a check payable to their government! What a deal! ;) (My wife did put a quick end to that though! Something about 'buying' an award just wasn't the same as really earning it...)

Umalatova's menu

Folks,

due to fruitful additional informations from Alexei, Tal and Art, I am now able to show, which authentic oders might be possible to get awarded from Miss Umalatova (= Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the CCCP):

1. HERO OF THE SOVIET UNION

2. HERO OF SOCIALIST LABOUR

3. ORDER OF LENIN

4. ORDER OF STALIN (Umalatova award!)

5. ORDER OF THE RED STAR

So hurry up, because at the 1st of july a new "Anti-Umalatova"-law will get into power, which says, that it is not o.k., if Miss Umalatova still awards SU-awards.

I don't know the statutes of the orders now, but I think, if you go in front of the Russian Embassy in Washington with a red flag in your hand and a "ghetto-blaster" on your shoulder, then play the hymn (of course with the old words, from the Stalin-age) and burn a photograph of Putin, then you might get at least a RED STAR (+ some hours in an US-jail).

Or if you want to be a authentic HSL (includes LENIN ORDER!): Get the (pro forma) manager of a pig farm somewhere with - let me say - 100 pigs. Then buy - at the black market - 1.000 baby-pigs. Then publish your production statistic and records. You can make a perfect propaganda around your person, because you doubled the output in pig-production at your farm!!!

Or to get a STALIN ORDER: Just publish a small nice advertisment in TIME-magazine, showing Stalin with a small girl (and a baby-pig, if you want so) and saying: "Josef Stalin, friend of everyone".

So if you combine the pig-number with the embassy-action and the ad in TIME, then you will get a perfect personal group: HSL, LENIN, STALIN and RED STAR - with authentic documents showing your name + maybe an invitation to visit North Korea, Irac and Cuba as a special guest of the governments (but you have to cover all costs, these are poor countries). I have heard, that there might be the possibility to get a small handsome monument in North Korea, saying that you are a "Meritorious Swine-Farmer and HSL" and a farm will be named after you: XXXX-Swine-Farm "Red October".

To get serious again: I think it is a historical outstanding situation, that more than 10 years after the end of a state, some of the authentic awards of this state are still conferred for achievments, that took place long after the end of this state!!!

Alexei's revelations about the "menu"

At an other thread Alexei was writing this:

"Comrade Umalatove and the gang still issue Soviet awards, and here's the menu:

- HSU (some unconfirmed recipients: Kouznetsov, Kulbertinov, Protodiakonov, Zakharov, Stalin's son Dzhugashvily posthumously);
- HSL (again unconfirmed: Apazidi, Kobzon, Tkachenko);
- Order of Lenin;
- Order of the October Revolution (Rubiks from Latvia, 1997);
- Order of the Red Banner of Labor;
- Order of the Red Banner;
- Order of the Red Star;

plus of course the fantasy awards.

Here's THE most interesting part - none of the Soviet awards issued by Umalatova, were made at the mint or purchased from Gohran. Each one of them was special ordered at the same factory, that produces those fantasy medals, and Umalatova charges the recipients 20 Roubles - 250 USD "to offset production costs". Ironicaly this was one of the factors that got her in trouble with the law - she was accused of "collaborating with fake producers". HSL and HSU stars were described as made of "Samovar gold" (something that shines, but is not gold) and "cheap gold alloy". Order of Lenin was described as "cheap jewlery". At the same time I have seen an original mint production Red Star with very high serial number and Umalatova issue document, but apparently this number was just entered by somebody in the blanc Umalatova card.

Alexei"

Sorry folks, forget the pig farm, the TIME ad and the Embassy ****, nobody will get authentic SU-awards nowadays.

We don't want to pay USD 250,- for "Samovar gold", "cheap gold alloy" or "cheap jewelery" - it is cheaper at e-bay.

Veteran wearing a Umalatova-Stalin medal

Gentlemen,

I found a interesting photograph of an old veteran wearing Miss Umalatova's medal for Stalin's 120th birthday just left besides the Lenin's 100th birthday medal.

In lieu of creating a new thread, I'll just post my question here.
What has become of Umalatova lately? Prison? Deportation? Exile?

Retired...?

I think I might have heard she is mostly retired now. I'd be very surprised if she ended up in prison. I believe her organization has a small but loyal following, and even the big man himself (not the new one, but the real one) waxes nostalgic on occasion. She undoubtedly reminds people of a time when they felt more important and had pension that stetched a bit further (although most probably conveniently forget the fear, drudge, and repression).

I was in Torjok two years ago, coincidently with Lenin's birthday, and a small and very elderly (but quite vocal) crowd was out to say happy birthday to the bald dude who started it all. I gather there's more than a bit of that?
