Great Patriotic War Bibliography

Here is a short annotated bibliography of some interesting works on the GPW. This is from an old paper of mine and is focused on the Soviet soldier and war economics not on a history of battles etc.

I will post other work later.

Shawn

PS I put it here instead of the research section as it is really nothing to do with award research, just overall background knowledge.

Narodnyi Kommissariat Oborony Soyuza SSR, Stroevoi Ustav Pekhoty RKKA. Moscow: Voenizdat, 1940.
- this and other official manuals are good for study of theory and other interesting details, interesting to see what was and was not expected of soldiers.

Parrish, Michael, The U.S.S.R. in World War II: An Annotated
Bibliography. 2 Volumes. New York: Garland, 1981.
- the real bibliography listing over 5000, mostly Russian, works on the war, with notes. A must for further research.

Poliakov, Iu.A., Zhironskaia, V.B., and Kiselev, I.N., "The 1937
Census" in Russian Studies in History Vol. 31, Number 1, Summer 1992.
- good for studying composition of RKKA on eve of war.

Reese, Roger, "A Note on the Consequence of the Expansion of the Red Army on the Eve of World War II", in Soviet Studies, Vol. 51, Number 1.
- Reese’s very important thesis that the effect of purges on RKKA’s wartime performance has been over-rated. It was still important but not as much as the fact that between end of purges (38') and beginning of war (41') the number of officers in the RKKA tripled! This had a far more important effect on a wider range of issues than the loss of some of the original officers as now most officers were new and many positions were still unfilled.

ibid, Stalin's Reluctant Soldiers. Lawrence, KA: University Press of Kansas, 1996.
- excellent study of RKKA soldiers, unfortunately it is for pre-war era late 20s and 1930s.

Rigby, T.H., Communist Party Membership in the U.S.S.R., 1917-1967. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 1968.

Sella, Amnon, The Value of Human Life in Soviet Warfare. London: Routledge, 1992.
- amazing and almost unknown study that blows away most of the simplistic assumptions on the Red Army. He had full access to Soviet RKKA medical service archives and other combat records. Yes losses were huge and conditions poor but this was generally limited more to the early part of the war. From mid-war on the RKKA provided much better medical care for their men than Soviet civilians had ever had - very important issue for morale of soldiers. It was also better than the Germans for last two years of war. What stunned me was the study of the RKKA’s psychological care system. When Patton was slapping soldiers and making fun of shell-shock the RKKA had over a dozen hospitals for shell shock victims alone plus psychologists down to divisional level in many cases. Kind of puts the “the NKVD shot everyone who did not stay in line at the front and fight bravely” crap into perspective doesn’t it.

Sharp, Charles C., Soviet Order of Battle World War II. Privately Published, 1995-1996.
Volume I: "The Deadly Beginning" Soviet Tank, Mechanized, Motorized Divisions and Tank Brigades of 1940-1942.
Volume II: "School of Battle" Soviet Tank Corps and Tank Brigades January 1942 to 1945.
Volume III: "Red Storm" Soviet Mechanized Corps and Guards Armoured Units 1942 to 1945.
Volume IV: "Red Guards" Soviet Guards Rifle and Airborne Units 1941 to 1945.
Volume V: "Red Sabers" Soviet Cavalry Corps, Divisions, and Brigades 1941 to 1945.
Volume VI: "Red Thunder" Soviet Artillery Corps, Divisions, and Brigades 1941 to 1945.
Volume VII: "Red Death" Soviet Mountain, Naval, NKVD, and Allied Divisions and Brigades 1941 to 1945.
Volume VIII: "Red Legions" Soviet Rifle Divisions Formed Before June 1941.
Volume IX: "Red Tide" Soviet Rifle Divisions Formed From June to December 1941.
Volume X: "Red Swarm" Soviet Rifle Divisions Formed From 1942 to 1945.
Volume XI: "Red Volunteers" Soviet Militia Units, Rifle and Ski Brigades 1941 - 1945.
-best study of RKKA units.

U.S. Army, Handbook on Russian Military Forces. US Army, 1945-1946.
- this is the US intel manual made by ex-Nazi intelligence officers. Still great book on equipment and stuff.

Von Hagen, Mark, Soldiers in the Proletarian Dictatorship. Ithaca, NY: Cornell University Press, 1990.
- excellent study of soldiers from 1920s to early 30s.

ibid, "Soviet Soldiers and Officers on the Eve of the German Invasion", in Wieczynski, Joseph L., ed., Operation Barbarossa. Salt Lake City, UT: Charles Schlacks Jr., 1993.

Wirtschafter, Elise K., From Serf to Peasant Soldier. Princeton, N.J.: Princeton University Press, 1990.
- study of late Tsarist soldiers but excellent for examining methodology of studying enlisted personnel in Russia.

Shawn,

An excellent list! I will try to add some other scholarly works in a little while. If poeple read your list, I think many would have a different (and more proper) historical perspective on the war.

Any chance to get a copy of your thesis?

Thanks,
Ed Maier

Just finished reading Stalingrad. I highly recommend it.

It does not pull any punches.
