That's pretty nice. Using my Soviet badge experience I'd date that fairly early - 50s?

You really think so? That would be great, I got it in a lot purchase of DDR pins and badges. Are you going by the pin??

Guys,

It does not look like 1950's to me in the German context. Remember that production methods and specificities varied quite markedly between the DDR and the Soviet Union.
I believe that it is a later, 1970~80's production. Charlet should be able to throw some more precise light on this matter.

I agree, in the 50ies, even german enamels were correct in quality.

According to Frank Bartel's catalogues, this insignia has been created in 1973, but I believe this is the second version, with the suspension enameled and the medail with epoxy enamel (B.941b) , a bit more scarce, but still cheap value award. Never seen one of this kind, I got several copies made of the classic and common expoxy enamel.

A little more information on the award.
This type of Honour pin, (Ehrennadel für Verdienste im sozialistischen Bildungswesen) was established on 1st December 1973 and replaced the Ehrennadel des Ministeriums für Volksbildung which was awarded from 28th March 1963.
It was awarded for special achievements in volunteer work, as well as for longtime volunteer involvement in the Socialist education system. Also for volunteer activities in the education of young people.
Awarding was by the local governing bodies of the people's education institution on behalf of the State Secretariat for vocational training.
