2 Book set

I have this set of books and find them very useful. The medal variations, in particular, are very nice to have, as well as the photos of the award citations. For the Russian reader, the appendices describing the regulations codifying the postwar practice of giving high orders and medals for years of service is very interesting.

Gentlemen,

Is this book "Orders and Medals of the USSR 1918-1991" by Sergey Shishkov & Mikhail Muzalevsky, still considered a must for a serious Soviet Awards collector, or in the meantime was a better and more accurate reference (in English or at least in Russian AND English) published? If yes, which one? By the way, when was this book published? After PMD's "The Comprehensive Guide", right?

Art, have you bought it in the meantime? What would be your verdict?

Thanks a lot,

Dolf

Dolf,

It was published after PMD. I have both, and I do enjoy these books quite a lot (the English text is very approximative). It is an investment, but I believe a worthwile one.
As far as I know, no other useful global reference has been published since, apart from the Mondvor site. Email me if you want to further discuss details.

Marc,

I also do have PMD's Guide, but I'm looking for more reference books on this subject, eventually containing more detailed and/or more updated info and/or other aspects not covered on PMD's book.
From what I've read here it seems this Shishkov & Muzalevsky's book is also a must for Soviet Awards collectors.
So before moving forward I just wanted to check with the experts on the Forum if there's nothing even better and more recently published that would worth the investment.

Merci,

Dolf

It's a good book to have. Just remember that the information in this book is not up to date, and there are some mistakes in it.

I have these books and am very happy with them.

I also have the books and am very happy with them as well. They don't replace The Comprehensive Guide, but are good when used in tandem.

Gentlemen,

Thanks a lot for your most valuable and highly appreciated replies.

I'm just curious, because I don't know if the person I've been in touch with is or not one of the authors, and right now can't confirm because he is away for another couple of days or so, but he signs his emails as Sergey.
So my question is: do you know if Mr. Sergey Shishkov is an Israelian or at least lives in Israel?

Thanks again,

Dolf

I don't believe Shishov lives in Israel. I believe he is active-duty Russian Navy and lives in Vladivostok.

Guys,

In the meantime I saw another apparently new edition, on a Russian site, it seems that this one is only in 1 volume! (That's what I've been told, but which I can't confirm as I can't read Russian :o )

As I'm not sure if I can post the link (that would be useful for those speaking Russian to help us understand about this "new edition"), here is just a pic from that site.

The only difference I can see is that on this cover the letters are black rather than gold as in the 2 volumes edition discussed on this thread.

I have this book in 2 volumes, and think it is a very valuable one, even if ,as already said, it would need an update (as PMD's one...).

What is really interesting and a "plus" is the "statistical part" : chronology of awarding, and some lists of multi-awarded orders by SN.

The book in 2 volumes is around 750 pages... I would be interested in knowing more about this 1 volume edition. Just hope the statistical parts have not been suppressed...

Cheers.

Ch.
