The Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic (საქართველოს საბჭოთა სოციალისტური რესპუბლიკა) was founded on 25th February 1921 from the Democratic Republic Of Georgia (საქართველოს დემოკრატიული რესპუბლიკა) and became a part of the Transcaucasian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic (ამიერკავკასიის საბჭოთა ფედერაციული სოციალისტური რესპუბლიკა) on 12th March 1922. The TSFSR itself became a founding republic of the Union Of Soviet Socialist Republics (საბჭოთა სოციალისტური რესპუბლიკების კავშირი) on its creation on 30th December 1922. On 5th December 1936 the TSFSR ceased to exist and the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic became a Soviet Republic in its own right.
T'pilisi (ტფილისი), from 1936 Tbilisi (თბილისი) was the capital of the Georgian SSR and was highly industrialised during the Soviet period and was remote enough not to suffer at the hands of invaders during the Great Patriotic War. Even though the Georgian SSR was not physically invaded their contribution to the war effort was very noticeable with Georgians holding ranks in the Red Army from the bottom to Generalissimus Stalin. The Georgian influence on the first half of the history of the Soviet Union was very strong with Iosef Stalin and Lavrentij Berija both being Georgians.
The Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic was renamed the Republic Of Georgia (საქართველოს რესპუბლიკის) on 9th November 1990 and declared independence from the Soviet Union on 9th August 1991 although it was not recognised. The constitution of the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic remained in place until 6th November 1992.
