I dont think some lieutnant from the uniform regulation department in the Ministry of internal affairs would dare to approach a MSU or general with comments on the ribbons...

I wonder why they ended up that way? You can tell that the ribbons were taken from single awards and put onto the multi-sectional rack (e.g. the ROB ribbons are squiggly and the ribbons on the lower rack have the fold mark at the top of the ribbon where the ribbon folded over the single suspension (which as we all know tends to be slightly smaller than the multi-place-rack sort)). If you are going to take the time to transfer the awards from single to multi-place form, why not invest the extra 5 minutes while doing to to make sure the ribbons are on right? :weird

ribbons

Not speaking of this uniform in particular, but looking at some M1945 generals pics where the ribbons are 'reversed' it does not look like a mistake; it looks like it was done on purpose, in my guess to make the bar look more "european". dd

Doug,

Not that I can think of any other explanation, but why would somebody want to make his bar look more "european"

ribbons

Its a guess, I admit; but i have seen it enough to think its not a mistake. So, I guess that these generals wanted to just have a more "European look". Why is up to them; maybe they saw ribbons done that way in books or on allied generals, etc. maybe just to be slightly different. I would have done it that way, it just looks better to me : )

Doug,

I guess preferences and tastes change with time, and it was probably "cool" (if this term is aplicable to a military uniform) back then for some reason. To me, a Russian, who had to wear a uniform for some time, it looks so :thumbsdown

looks

To each his own; i guess in a military where uniformity was king, this little difference meant something to a few guys. But it did seem to fade fast; i have only seen these types of ribbons on M1945 uniforms, never on later ones ( does not mean it was not done, but i have never seen a real example / photo).

I think the term you're thinking of is "stylish". Fashions do have a way of coming and going, indeed -- the Zhukov uniform may have been popular at the time, but to me it seems too bombastic and unharmonious. I rather think uniforms post-1960's seemed to have hit that nice balance between function, simplicity and modernity.

Whoever mounted the ribbons might very well have gotten confused while threading them on the suspension ... they do fit both ways! It took me a few attempts before I got the ribbons mounted uniformly on a multiple suspension the first time around.
