Honour Medal.

I'm not sure if anyone wants to see this or not, but what the heck, this kind of thing doesn't happen to me every day. I received this from president Shevardnadze last Thursday morning in a ceremony at the state chancellory here in Tbilisi. As I reminded my wife, I win a medal every third of a century or so.

I'm staying in today, Sunday 11-02-03, as this is the day of parliamentary elections and not a good time to be on the streets. I'll try to post a few other images of some badges I have recently acquired.

The cased medal also comes with a nice presentation folder containing the proclamation (bi-lingual for mine) in addition to the laminated award card. They told me that I'm the first foreigner to be awarded this. It is their highest civilian medal.

Thanks for putting up with this.

Thumbs up

Chuck,

Congratulations. Very nice and prestigious medal. This confirms one more time that this forum is extremely well frequented.

Is the SN (260) engraved on the back ?

Ch.

You made me look. I think that the 260 is the number of the presidential decree. At any rate, the medal isn't numbered.

Why?

I blurred out the specific text of the proclamation because I didn't think it added much and it really is pretty modest. I am a US Treasury adviser to the minister of finance here, under a USAID contract. I did some stuff that worked and that they liked. There was a significant amount of money involved, but they didn't want to write about that, so they cited some other things I did. Like I said, modest and maybe a little confusing, but success is rare enough here. I'll take lucky any time.

Chuck, that's awesome!

I wish I could travel but since I work for Federal Reserve the best I can do is one of 12 other banks...

Rusty ... "I wish I could travel ..." If you already work for the Fed and you are interested in international work, I can promise you that there is a TON of banking and fiscal reform work available in developing countries like Georgia. If that appeals to you, check out the web site of the US Treasury's Office of Technical Assistance. I think that I'm not supposed to post any links here, but you can run it on Google and get right to it. Use these key words: treasury office technical assistance. They need you a LOT more than you need them. There are also a lot of development jobs in the private sector. Check out the Developmentex web site.

DougD ... Georgia is not well these days. Corruption is rampant and the nation is essentially lawless. Bringing about rule of law is a daunting challenge. I have just one small part of that and I have been having all kinds of trouble for the past couple of years. I am not hopeful.

As you may know, the president's party only got 3% of the vote in last year's local elections. They have formed a whole new party to try to capture a larger share of the electorate.

Many fear that the election results were known long ago. I can't say. However, some of the Tbilisi polling places were locked up this morning and there is already talk of a "re-election" in those districts. Most of the international observers are staying at the hotel I stay in. They are starting to come back in now and they look pretty beat. My impression is that Speaker Nino Burjanadze will make some important inroads this year that will stand her in good stead for the presidential elections in 2005, when Shevardnadze steps down. That will be a very tense time, indeed.
