It comes down to storage and use as always Ericsky. I have similar patinas with my Glories. A couple are as black as spades and others are nice and shiny. Depends on where they were kept and if there was humidity etc etc. But I guess you have that covered in your counterfiting operation:D

Re: CSM and patina, or lack thereof.

Many of the basements and attics in Russia, Ukraine, etc. are near high-sulfur burning factories and and generating stations. If you ever do the silver spoon and the hard-boiled egg yolk experiment, you will get the same black color. It means the medal is real silver and that the air around the medal was not especially good to breathe.

Combat Service question

Hello all,
I found this medal some weeks ago in Poland. I already know what kind of medal it is, but I was wondering if it would be possible to find out to whom this medal belonged, seen the fact that there's a serial number on the back of the medal. Does anyone know if this is possible and if so, where I can find a dababase or something? It's probably impossible, but I'm just asking.. Thanks in advance!

Re: Medal for Combat Service question

The number suggests an early 1943 award.

Combat Service Medal that will be researched

Going through my collection I found this Combat Service Medal S/N 951396. It's on a steel suspension. When I can i will definately get it researched.

Re: Combat Service Medal that will be researched

Doc, looking at this one reminds me of something I was thinking about earlier. I got a few things in the mail today, including an inexpensive set of Maternal Glory orders because, well frankly, because they were cheap. I trust the seller, so I know it wasn't him, but somebody polished them up so hard that the gold plating on the first class is all but obliterated. Only the faintest hints still linger in some of the grooves. I guess shine sells.

Shine sells, but when to wear your medals proudly, I would rather choose shine than darkened silver. We have to remember that the recipients of these awards were not collectors and did not care much for does and don'ts of the collecting world.

Re: Combat Service Medal that will be researched

It definately has been polished. However, due to the serial number and steel suspension I will get this one researched when I can afford to.

Re: unsual CSM booklet

CSM booklet: Vasily Mikhailovich Pushkarev, date of privileges 1 Jan 1946, filled in on 30 Jan 1946.

On the Moscow doc he is a Sr. Lt., signed on 25 Aug 1944 by the commander of the 196th Regiment of NKVD Troops, Lt.Col. Fomin. I can't read the words in between, I would need a larger scan for that.

On the VoG doc he is a Captain, signed on 20 Oct 1946 by the commander of the 196th Regiment of NKVD Troops, Lt.Col. Ukronntsev or something like that, I need a larger scan.
