Unknown bulgarian award
What´s this? An award, a badge, a prototype?

Re: Unknown bulgarian award
It is a very interesting and cool design that I wish had color, but I don't know of any that were issued like this one. If I remember correctly, the People's Republic of Bulgaria (communist) had a "hero" star, but it looked very much like the HSL. I can't say that I've ever seen one like this - but I'd like to.;) It would be especially good-looking if the darker shaded areas on the star were red enamel.

Dunno, but it says:
Star of Republic of Bulgaria III class Materials: Gold;Silver;Bronze;Enamel I guess it's a prototype, I even would say, it's for high award, considering materials used.

Re: Unknown bulgarian award
It is very much like the earliest ('40's- early '50's- the award changed appearance greatly thereafter) Star of Romania award... trimmed-out star with a circle and intertwining Republic initials in the center. I would suggest that this is, essentially, a proposed copy of that award that never came into being.

Re: Unknown bulgarian award
Esteban, out of curiosity, where did you get the picture from?

Re: Unknown bulgarian award
Got it from an ebay auction. It´s being sold as a "rare award card".

Never made and issued as far as I am aware and I have been collecting Bulgarian for several years.

Esteban,
Is it a picture or is it an original drawing? Marc |

Re: Unknown bulgarian award
Judging by the letter fonts, I suppose it must be a picture rather than a drawing. The photo quality makes it hard to tell.

Re: Unknown bulgarian award
I know a little about this process as it is what I did for more than a few years. What you are looking at is "final artwork" for a proposed medal. What lead to this was many rough sketches that had to go through the approval process- some being "nixed" right off the bat; elements of some others being kept. Once all elements have been decided on, a finished drawing is produced and duplicated so that all the decision makers will have a copy. Then the decision will be made of whether or not to go to production. This is, I believe, what we're looking at here. Apparently, this particular medal never made the cut. A lot of work goes into producing a medal or badge to this point alone, and we haven't even made it to the die-making process yet. And it is still done this way today, although the computer has helped to speed up the process.
