Medal "In Memory Of The 10th Anniversary Of Withdrawal Of Soviet Forces".
This one is the Official issue medal commemorating 10 Years Since the End of Soviet War in Afganistan. This is the variant without buttons on the tunic. Issued in 1999.

"Юбилейная медаль "В память 10-летия вывода советских войск из Афганистана"
Медаль учреждена Указом Президента Республики Беларусь № 80 от 05.02.1999 г. Изменения в положение о медали внесены Указом № 175 от 24.04.2003 г." The accompanying document I have to my medal is issued by the CIS however.

I asked that question because the medal is written in Russian, not in Belarussian...

The language can be a confusing issue in tracking down lots of post-Soviet awards. All the alliances and partnerships and parallel ministries... and all out to save a few dollars so use the exact same design through out all of them. I know I've spent some time in some confusion trying to track some awards down and the fact that each nation refers to it in their native tongue but the award may not doesn't help. If you can grab a hold of the document with the award you are definitely closer to an answer but not always. Usually if the award is in a language other than Russian though (Ukrainian for example) it is usually only awarded in that particular nation. Thousands of them to track down!
The CIS variation of the document.

Re: Medal "In Memory Of The 10th Anniversary Of Withdrawal Of Soviet Forces".
A quick point re: Russian language. In Belarus Russian and Belarussian have equal status as both being official languages of the Republic since a referendum in 1995. 86% of Belarusians voted in favour of equal joint status of the two languages.
This results in belarusian medals and awards sometimes having a different language to another! In fact I have Belarusian MVD graduation badges that are identical apart from the letters MVD on one and MUS on the other (Russian language, Belarusian language). If the recipient can choose or not would be interesting to know! |
