Fake Academy Badges
These are very commonly faked. Fakes are usually brand new without any wear traces, made of some sort of white alloy, nice enamel, Soviet crest is quite detailed, shields with academy names are just glued to the badge.

Alexei,
In a genuine badge, how the shields with academy names are attached? BTW, It is possible to take an authentic badge without a shield and just attach a shield. Tal |

Tal,
Here's the back of an original badge. I suppose it would be possible to attach a shield to a genuine old badge, but since old badges are not cheap it just makes more sence to make them from the scratch. Alexei Quote:

My back is similar, however it has a square screwpost base, and the wreath is fastened with a rivet. The sheild is fastened the exact same way though.
Thanks Alexei! Art

Re: Glued on shields are fakes?
Christian,
I was thinking about it, and the answer is no. They have dropped those shields in 1957, and the military was not happy about it so there were some customer made shields attached to badges in different ways. By the way, Russian collectors think that 64 different official shield variations exist. Alexei Quote:

I recently received couple of these graduation badges. It looks like they posibly fall into Alexei's decription of fakes.
What do you think? Last edited by new world; 09-07-2002 at 11:29 AM. |

How do you tell a fake?
As Alexei said, in 1957 the shields were dropped. Since then the use of shield has been up to the school/academy commander. Even genuine ones are glued and genuine ones are the same quality as these "fakes" shown here. I suspect that, like other 1970s-80s era Soviet badges these are the same construction as genuine. In other words they are then same as genuine but issued post-USSR in vast numbers. If I am wrong what is the difference in a genuine one issued in the mid-1980s?? Shawn |
