Gentlemen,

Some pics of two Russian Warships I had the opportunity to visit this week end in Lisbon.
Hope it's of some interest.
Enjoy.

First pic is a overall view of the bigger ship (the name can be seen on the second pic), not sure what kind of ship it is, only that it carries armoured cars for amphibious assaults.

Can anyone please let me know what's the name? I asked to the sailors and they kindly told me but obviously in Russian which I couldn't memorise

View of one of the armoured cars for transport of infantry on a amphibious assault, on the hold of the ship.

Another view of the amphibian transport ship.
On the lower left corner you can see the "doors" of the hold where the armoured cars are kept.

The band, with yours truly on first plan

The second ship, a frigate.

Again can someone please let me know the name?

Aboard the frigate.
I believe it's an old K-26 helicopter, for rescue on the sea and apparently for anti submarine attacks (at least that's what one of the sailors speaking English told me).

There were special forces guarding both ships, an absolutely necessary measure these days

Last one: a sailor of a Guards unit (?), on the access to the frigate.

The second ship is: Neustroshimiy roughly translated - unscarable...

Interesting badges!

Rusty.

Excellent photos. Didn't know the Russians allowed visitors to their ships. I hope they will come in my part of the world one day.

Guys,

Thanks a lot.

Seb, yes I noticed the big Red Star, that's exactly one of the reasons I took that picture ;)
Funny, Kaliningrad is also the name of a city in the Baltic Sea where I believe their base is. I believe one of the sailors told me they were returning home (Kaliningrad) after Lisbon. But Kaliningrad is still in Russia, or is it in Lithuania now?

Rusty, yes, that sounds like the name they told me in Russian. And yes, the Badges are nice ;)
I was a bit surprised to see sailors with the Guards Badge, I thought those were for Infantry, but they told me that on those ships (at least on the Kaliningrad) they have obviously sailors to navigate the ship, but also Infantry for the amphibious assaults, so I guess they belong to a small Guards unit.

Danny, as mentioned above, after Lisbon they are on their way home right now, but before Lisbon I know they were in other countries, just can't remember which ones
Maybe next time they will visit Canada...
I think it's normal here that ships from different countries who stay a few days allow the public to visit at least during one or two days.

Glad to notice that at least some of you guys enjoyed the pictures! Thank you for the kind compliments!

Thanks again.

Dolf

Yes, that's exactly why the ship is named that :)

Kaliningrad is still part of Russia, a former part of East Prussia (Konigsberg). I don't who it would be handed back to, really.

The Neustrashimy

Dolf,

Very good pics. :)

The previous comments did not say that Kaliningrad is the only part of Russia, totally geographically surrounded by Europe !!

About the Neustrashimy :

The Neustrashimy ("Redoubtable") class frigate was designed to combat submarines and surface ships and provide defense to task forces and convoys. Soviet Navy design and operation requirements were established in 1972. The new ship was supposed to displace about 800 tons and develop a speed of 35 knots. In the 1976 detail design the displacement was 1,700 tons, and the modified detail design of 1979 called for a displacement of 2,000 tons, and 2,500 tons with a helicopter on board.

The ship is equipped with a missile and torpedo launch system capable of launching six Vodopad-NK (SS-N-16) antisubmarine missiles or torpedoes. Starting with the second ship in the series, the Neustrashimy class escort ships was planned to be armed with four Uran-type quadruple antiship missile launchers (16 anti-ship missiles), which would dramatically enhance the ship's combat capabilities. The Uran system launches the Kh-35 antiship cruise missile which is known by the NATO designation AS-20. The A Klinok air defence missile system comprising four vertical launch modules is mounted just behind the ship's 100 mm gun. The Klinok missile carries the NATO designation SA-N-9; a Kashtan air defence gun-missile system comprising one command system with two combat modules (64 missiles and 600 rounds) mounted either side of the satellite communications dome. Each system is equipped with a 30 mm calibre twin Gatling gun, the Kashtan missile system, and a fire control radar and optronic director. The Kashtan missile is the export name for the 9M311 missile otherwise known as the Grison or the Kortik, and which carries the NATO designation SA-N-11. The missiles incorporate a laser beam guidance system.

The ship has a helicopter landing deck which occupies the full width of the deck at the stern, and a hangar which accommodates a single Ka-27 helicopter.

Only three hulls had been laid down by the end of the Cold War. The first unit, Neustrashimy, entered service with the Russian Navy in 1993.
In November 1998 the Yantar Works in Kaliningrad announced that it was scrapping the incomplete second and third Neustrashimyy-class frigates to recoup some of its uncompensated investment.

Neustrashimyy, based in the Baltic Sea is the #712.

Ch.

Tretov, Christophe,

Thank you very much for the comments and clarifications, and specially the great description about the Neustrashimy! That is very interesting indeed, Christophe!

About Kaliningrad, I had a quick look at a small map and it looked like being part of Lithuania. Sorry, my mistake, I didn't know it was the current name of the former Königsberg :(
So in fact it's just a city completely surrounded by Poland, Lithuania and the Black Sea, right?

Thank you.
