Medal "For The Defence Of Kiev".
Just seen a defence of Kiev medal on Ebay
here is the description:- 34mm Brass Medal on 5 sided suspension complete with ribbon in good condition awarded 180,000 times This is Variation 1 rated R2 I thought this seemed strange so I checked on this site were it is rated as R1 with no variations. Which is correct? Obviously Im assuming this website is ;-) Mark (MozzaBloke) |

Hi Mark
Nice to see another UK member here :) McDaniel's bible "Comprehensive guide..." says R2, and R3 for the mint mistake with the Capture of Vienna reverse which is classed as variation 2. It goes on to add that it is being faked. I wonder if the mint mistake is being faked? Anyone seen one? McL |

Mark,
You are correct :) I should have the mint-mistake variation listed and I will fix that right now. Regarding rarity, this isn't engraved in stone and I welcome any discussion on changing the rarity grades on any part of the site. I will post a poll on the Kiev medal regarding rarity. Art

Hello. I have just received this Defense of Kiev document to complement the controversial medal I posted some time ago in the fake-medals forum.
What about its originality? Thanks for your opinions. Two more scans of the same document, with the "crest-test" :) sergio Last edited by CtahhR; 03-05-2012 at 09:45 AM. |

Re: Kiev Document
Here are the scans of the DoK documents that came with the medal I posted in the fakes section: http://www.soviet-awards.com/forum/s...medals-71.html. The booklet looks real enough, but as you all know, I just have to be sure.:)
Phillip (Sorry Art. I forgot to compress the second photo.:o)

Re: Kiev Document
A most unusual awarding issued in Erevan, Armenia - strange. Could be 100% legit or could have been a real blank document filled out with a real unit stamp (belonging to an Armenian commissariat).

Here is where I'm stuck though since I cannot tell for sure from the document itself. However, if the medal that I got with it is fake as well, then I will have a good reason to be more concerned. I would appreciate anyone's thoughts on the medal I posted (link is above). Thanks in advance, Phillip

Re: Medal "For The Defence Of Kiev".
Hey Mark,
we all know that there is only one type of Kiev medals, but I read that there are different variations. Do you have any info about that? |

Re: Medal "For The Defence Of Kiev".
Travel-North,
There is one, official type for the Kiev medal. However, some time after the fall of the Soviet Union, some Kiev medals appeared with a different reverse, namely, that of the Capture of Vienna medal. It is thought that these were specifically minted for the collector market at the Mint, probably sometime about 1993. Marc |
